I've installed Ubuntu on another of my systems. When I start the system up, it runs apparently without issue, BOINC manager shows it working on four tasks, (quad core machine of course). After a time, perhaps a little less than one hour, it misbehaves. BOINC Manager shows the tasks, but no progress is being made, elapsed and remaining remain static. I am not 100% sure, but I was watching a video on youtube this evening on that machine to see if I could see anything that might help. What happened is the video froze, and greyed out for circa a minute, then restarted from where it was. The BOINC Manager window was frozen. If I stop and restart BOINC Manager, the columns are blank. I do not know enough about Ubuntu to see if anything is still running, there probably is a Linux equivalent of the Windows task manager but I don't know how to access it to see what the science apps are doing, if anything. Puzzling. Wave upon wave of demented avengers march cheerfully out of obscurity into the dream. |

Please note that 'in use' settings are unlikely to work correctly. It's best to let BOINC run science apps even when the computer is in use. The BOINC Manager window was frozen. If I stop and restart BOINC Manager, the columns are blank. Did you get BOINC from Ubuntu repository or from this site? If it's from repository you can restart BOINC client with the following command: sudo service boinc-client restart Besides 'restart' you can also use 'start', 'stop' and 'status'. Linux equivalent of the Windows task manager System Monitor. |

BOINC normally runs 24/7 on my machines. I have not changed that on the Ubuntu system and assume this is the default behaviour. Initially, I downloaded it from the site as I normally would with Windows systems, but it didn't work, (it was missing a library), so as advised, I installed the package from the repository. I was going to try the restart command, but could not get a new command window to open. In preparation, I have another window opened ready to go. Of course, this is not a solution, I am not sitting here 24/7, but is an easier way forward when I am. I'll try to find System Monitor, it is probably there, or easy enough to find. I meant your computing preferences, and the 'in use' ones in particular. I can't remember what the defaults are and of course if you have changed them I can't know what they are now. |

Both computing and network activity are unlimited. I don't recall if that was the default, probably, but would have changed it to that anyway. Wave upon wave of demented avengers march cheerfully out of obscurity into the dream. |

Well ok. I can't think of any other reason off-hand why the science app would stop like that. If/when it happens again post the last 10-20 messages from Event Log. Maybe the messages have some clues. |

I had the system running again this evening, BOINC Manager open, four jobs running, and I settled infront of youtube watching some stuff. Same thing happened, youtube froze for about a minute then carried on. BOINC had stopped, I could see messages in the log, but they were all the usual stuff, tasks starting and stopping, new ones downloading, nothing odd at all. I cut a page and tried to post it, but Firefox crashed, or disappeared, when I tried to restart it, it said it was already running. I am working on another machine right now. Something I could see was in the terminal window where I'd started BOINC Manager, there were some odd errors about not being able to create a filename, not file, but filename. These seemed to happen some time, ~20 minutes, before the problem occurred. Wave upon wave of demented avengers march cheerfully out of obscurity into the dream. |
