or rather, it'll connect once, just after installing. It'll run normally until it is shut down. From then on it won't connect to clients any more. The boinc client, however, will happily run on and on. Shut down and restart, perfectly well behaved. There are a few similar or related issues to be found on the 'net, on these very forums and elsewhere, but none have a solution to my specific problem. If anyone has any ideas as to why this is happening and how I can solve it, I'd be most grateful to hear. This is Bonc Manager version 7.2.42(x64) on Xubuntu 14.04 64bit Projects involved: World Commuity Grid and Rosetta Thanks for reading! |

Berkeley or distro version? Where is it installed? How do start the client and the Manager? |

Its the Berkley version. Although I've tried the distro version with the same issues. Installed in /usr/bin (if that is what you're asking) Client and manager load on startup. Not quite sure how, though, since I can't see them in the system's "Session and Startup" dialogue. Hope this helps. Thanks. |

Eeh, umm... Ok, so the Berkeley version is really a self-extracting archive, not an installer. When you use it typically you'd have both the program files and data directory in $HOME/BOINC . Installed in /usr/bin (if that is what you're asking) Did you copy the files there yourself or do you still have the distro packages installed? The files being boinc, boincmgr and boinccmd. Try to find out where BOINC's data directory is. The location is in one of the first messages in Manager's Event Log but if you can't get the Manager to talk to the client... Somehow find out the client's program ID. You can for example run "ps -A | grep boinc" and then the PID is the first number on the line. Then look in /proc/pid_of_boinc/fd . Some of the files there will be links to files in BOINC's data directory. Client and manager load on startup. Not quite sure how, though, since I can't see them in the system's "Session and Startup" dialogue. Ok, distro packages usually set up BOINC client to run as a service. Is file /etc/init.d/boinc-client present? Manager starting automatically isn't typical. Does your desktop environment remember what applications you had open when you log out and the re-open them when you log in? And since the Manager has problems connecting to the client when you close it and re-open, how do you re-open it? Click some menu item, type something in terminal? |

OK, I might have got the details wrong. By distro version I mean the version I download via the software centre or package manager. By Berkeley version I meant the Berkeley installer I download from boinc.berkeley.edu. As I mentioned before, both had issues with the BOINC manager unable to connect to the client. However, I have found a command run_manager that starts the BOINC manager which then will connect. Go figure... Anyway, afaic I'm good for now. Thanks for reading and for your assistance! |
