Recently, I put a comment (as below, in between two lines of "=======") in a thread and I was told to put it in a separate thread, so here it is:- Some years ago, I bought a Samsung N220 laptop, with Windows 7 (Home version) on it, for general use - I updated it to 2048 MB RAM, the maximum allowed. I added some BOINC programs to it and everything seemed fine. Recently I updated the laptop to Windows 10 and found that without BOINC even installed, the laptop was running at 60% of memory. With BOINC (latest version) installed it was using 95%. Other than BOINC nothing else should be running, other than background tasks, but looking at the laptop's Task Manager a lot of stuff seems to be running. I suppose my solution would be to buy a larger memory-sized laptop (any good ones around?), or to go back to Windows 7 - any suggestions? =============================================================================================================================================================== Would be interested in a solution to this Windows 10 problem. As currently using a Laptop (Samsung N220), Max RAM 2048MB, which is installed. BOINC worked perfectly ok with Windows 7, now with Windows 10, it uses 95% of RAM & sometimes hangs up. Maybe it would be easiest if you started a new topic for that problem, as it seems quite different from the "always in use" problem here. Then, plenty of additional information of your system would be needed also. Do you want to completely dedicate that laptop for BOINC usage? If so... the computer could be setup in a bit different way. Maybe there is useless things running at the background at the moment. Maybe something there could be cleaned up or stopped from wasting CPU time and eating memory. =============================================================================================================================================================== John F. Some additional questions... 1. What projects and which applications exactly would you like that laptop to run? What projects and applications was it running while it still had Windows 7 ? Different applications require different amounts of RAM. I'm sure there is some "light" work available that your laptop would be able to run much more easily than some "heavy" applications. You said "looking at the laptop's Task Manager a lot of stuff seems to be running.". 2. Would you be able to upload pictures that show all the running processes? A view from the Task Manager... or Process Explorer (https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653.aspx) would do fine. That would help to judge what is using the RAM. Maybe there is some useless bloatware running and we could turn them off. That would help that laptop to breathe. 3. Do you need that laptop also for "general use" at the moment? If not, then there might be a chance to use a heavier hand for disabling or cleaning up Windows settings and other than BOINC-related processes. ID: 64945 · |

Thanks for your reply, I did download the link you sent me, which was useful. I think most of the rise in memory use, I will have to live with. However, the main problem seems to be with the Einstein Home Screensaver, as can be seen in this link - http://www.johnfairweather42.webspace.virginmedia.com/Einstein_ScreenSaver.jpg Somehow it seems to have been corrupted, after I installed Windows 10, not sure why. For clarification, a Samsung N220 isn't a Laptop, But a Netbook, powered by an Intel Atom N450 processor, I have one myself, It is hardly the speediest thing out there. 26/10/2015 18:31:31 Starting BOINC client version 6.10.58 for windows_intelx86 Please post your Boinc startup from the Event Log. Currently, I can't see it - which log file, should I expect to see the details? (Well, I bought the Netbook in 2010, it probably needs updating now?) I think most of the rise in memory use, I will have to live with. However, the main problem seems to be with the Einstein Home Screensaver, as can be seen in this link - http://www.johnfairweather42.webspace.virginmedia.com/Einstein_ScreenSaver.jpg That happens a lot on my Windows 7 machine as well. It hasn't seemed to affect any of the results, however; they are still completed and validated without incident. My Detailed BOINC Stats
