Hello, again, So, as per the Notice in my BOINC Manager, I've tried several times last night, and again tonight as well, to download and install the newest version of BOINC for Windows (7.6.9). The Executable file downloads just fine, but will NOT launch in my WinXP machine. (I'm using Avast! Anti-Virus & Windows Firewall if that's any help.) Please note that, as a test, I clicked on a previous BOINC executable and it DID launch...so why won't 7.6.9? Please advise, and thanks again, Bram Weiser |

If you would like to give a chance for a newer test version, there's 7.6.15 : http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dev/forum_thread.php?id=10204&postid=65329#65329 |

If you would like to give a chance for a newer test version, there's 7.6.15 : But that runs the client at a reduced priority, making Boinc/Boinc Manager and application performance suffer, not an adviceable upgrade until the developers back out of those changes. Claggy |

Thanks, Richie & Claggy...but I'd truly prefer to be using "official" releases and not beta versions if I can help it. Plus, I'd expect my current version (7.2.42) to still work as intended in the meantime, too. Thanks again, Bram |

Hope you downloaded the correct version, i.e. the 32bit version of the installer as I'm sure the 64bit version will not work on XP. Else try this one https://boinc.berkeley.edu/dl/boinc_7.6.9_windows_intelx86.exe |

Just for fun, I downloaded both v7.6.9 installers and tried them on my (32-bit) XP machine. The 32-bit installer launched fine, but I cancelled it before accepting the licence agreement - I don't want that on here. The 64-bit installer displayed the splash logo while decompressing the msi, but then put this up: ![]() Not the greatest error message in the world, but I think we get the point. |

If you would like to give a chance for a newer test version, there's 7.6.15 : /offtopic I also noticed that line in the release notes and I believe it is possible that performance could suffer. It seems logical if the priorities are lowered. Anyway, I've run that version now for some days and I haven't noticed any changes in completion times so far. Not for those hosts that I just leave alone and let them concentrate on crunching... but also not for the single host that I use half the time for other things while it runs some BOINC work in the background. I've come into amateurish-conclusion and belief that the low priority might have an effect mainly at a few rare moments when the computer is really heavily stressed, 100% maxed. But if the computer has any un-used reserve at a given nanosecond, then it has enough free processing power at least for some maintenance work occasionally happening at the background (this scenario meaning a computer that is dedicated for crunching). And then the priority differences at micro-meta-level perhaps don't have enough domino-effect to change the whole line of computational power. So far, I can recommend this low-priority version without any doubts even for half-crunching situation. For the sake of using the latest also. It's fun. |

I've seen (and reported) a marked increase in Task exited with zero status but no 'finished' file messages with v7.6.15 on a machine which is rather over-stressed, plus a few extra Exit status 194 (0xc2) EXIT_ABORTED_BY_CLIENT I've reverted that one to v7.6.9, and I'll check in a few days whether the stats have returned to normal. |

Can you tell me what kind of error you get? If nothing jumps to the front on the actual install, check in Windows Event Viewer. To open Event Viewer, click Start, click Control Panel, click Performance and Maintenance, click Administrative Tools, and then double-click Event Viewer. Then check in the System, Programs and Setup events windows if there is any warning or message about the installer. And post that info here. |

Thanks, Jord. I got no error message, just, as you then wrote, that the installer doesn't seem to launch. I'd been double-clicking on the file's entry in Windows Explorer...but nothing happens. (Please note that I'm using WinXP, so, while I found the Event Viewer, it didn't seem to have all of the choices that you mentioned. I saw Application, Security and System.) I just tried, once more, to launch the BOINC installer (again nothing happened) and, when I went back into the Event Viewer, none of those three (3) choices had anything to say. Thanks for your insight, but is there something else you could please suggest? Bram |

Aside: I'm "subscribed" to this thread, once because I clicked on the "Subscribe" button, and, I suspect, also because of my posts, but I've gotten NO emails to tell me about new posts here. Is something amiss with that feature of these boards? |

Hi, Claggy, and thanks for responding, My preferences say "immediately, by email"...but curiously, I DID get an email about YOUR reply, so thanks just the same. Bram |
