I had an older version of BOINC, I believe 7.4.x. I think I downloaded it from the World Community Grid website. Since I installed it, it has said there is a new version and that I should update. After updating, it failed to open, so I uninstalled it and tried again a couple times. I then tried to delete the folder in the library and uninstall it completely, it did not help. It also had the advanced view when I opened it (I think it is advanced, where you can look at tasks, transfers, and everything). This is what I selected with the old version, maybe it is not fully uninstalled.

In any case, I can't get it to work at all now. As soon as it installs, it opens to tasks, it is empty, and it is the same size I had it before reinstalling. It gives me a message:

Communicating with BOINC client. Please wait…

I can either "Quit" or "Cancel" but Cancel just brings the same message back up. It won't let me do ANYTHING except to quit the program. I can't even open preferences.

How can I fix this issue?

What if you wait for some time? It can take a couple of minutes before BOINC Manager connects with the client.

I left it up in the background and it never did anything. I saw no data transfers occurring (I have a widget that tells me everything about data).

Now here is the strange thing… I last installed BOINC when I posted this. I deleted every folder related to it in Application Support and left the program in Applications. I restarted my computer today and it automatically started again. This time, it reset my projects list and asked me to choose a project. It still remained in the Advanced View (unless they changed the default, I assume that means I can't find a folder that I should have deleted). It connected and downloaded ONE project and told me "Welcome to World Community Grid!"

So it is now processing ONE task, but it will not download other tasks. It is odd, it showed a long list of transfers under that tab, many of different names. I recognized one cluster as processes from the cancer research project, but after the first one downloaded, the rest of the transfers just disappeared. But after telling it to update manually, I got 5 more, and that is it. My computer processes most of these in about an hour to 3 hours, and it processes 4 at a time, so I wish it would let me download about 50 of them at a time.

Maybe it will sort itself out. I'm not sure whats going on, I never saw this program react so strangely…

Is there a way to manually request tasks from ONE project from the World Community Grid? I selected "send other tasks" if I do not have enough Clean Energy Project tasks, but I only get ONE of those at a time. That is the project I am most passionate about. If I ONLY select that project, my computer only gets one or two to process.

Ah, I found the settings. I had keep at least 0.1 days of work, which is… Odd. I didn't set that, maybe it is default from WCG. Sorry for the confusion…

Now, I just wish I could request more work from that specific project.

I've had the same problem for a week. I turned it on today and now it's working fine so I assume there was a problem with connecting my computer to the client.

Turns out that my virus scanner Avast was blocking it so I've set it to be excluded.

It is back for me. After running a few days, it randomly popped up and all my tasks are frozen. They must have frozen almost exactly when I went to bed because the tasks have made almost no progress. I also had four processing errors yesterday. I have to admit, I am quite annoyed with this program. Maybe I shouldn't complain about a free program, but it hardly works, the preference system is garbage, and the program doesn't look very nice on high resolution screens. I feel like I must try an awful lot to donate electricity and CPU time to a program that only works half the time.
