I need to make a change to client_state.xml. I have read that BOINC needs to be stopped before I do this as it will overwrite my changes if it is still there. I obviously do not want to disrupt the work units, running or waiting, or do anything harmful to the system overall.I can simply exit manager, but that does not stop BOINC. What is a simple safe way to do this? Wave upon wave of demented avengers march cheerfully out of obscurity into the dream. |

If you have the Manager open (and you can open it again safely if you closed it): File menu "Shut down connected client..." and (potentially) answer the questions from there. For those other readers who don't use the Manager: boinccmd --quit |

>>> next connect of the affected project The project, which runs perfectly well on this machine, will not run now on the other identical system under my desk. I have been advised to alter the the value in client_state.xml. It makes no sense to me that a project would change a value back to a value that prevents it running. I would question that advice. What value, from what, to what? |

>>> In your BOINC_Data-Directory you will find a client_state.xml. Open this with a simple editor and search for: <p_vm_extensions_disabled>1</p_vm_extensions_disabled> If this is absent or the number is 0 / zero than all is fine. Otherwise change it to 0 / zero <<< That is the advice I have received. The item is, indeed, set to 1 on the machine that will not crunch their work units. So, do I change it, or ignore their advice, and as a result, ignore their project? Wave upon wave of demented avengers march cheerfully out of obscurity into the dream. |

Change it. That's a known problem: it should only come back if you mess with the BIOS settings of the host computer - which BOINC can't do. Mind you, you do need to have enabled the right class of virtualisation first - I hope your adviser gave you that too. |

>>> Mind you, you do need to have enabled the right class of virtualisation first - I hope your adviser gave you that too. My "advisor" has given me nothing that sounds remotely like what you have said there. So once again, I am having to start again trying to find out what the hell that means, if it needs changing and if so, how. In another thread, I was saying to someone asking about BOINC generally, how simple easy and safe it was. I find myself wondering how true those comments were now. Very sad, BOINC used to be like that. Wave upon wave of demented avengers march cheerfully out of obscurity into the dream. |

I'm very glad you are confused, how do you think I feel, but maybe perhaps you know now. I have two almost identical systems under my desk here, same motherboard, same CPU, same memory - type manufacturer size. One runs a project the other does not. I am simply trying to resolve that simple situation. I am told one thing, do this, then another don't do this unless you have that, then another saying wrong area, you need this... Classic example, the p_vm_extensions_disabled, is set to 1 on my other machine. So, I figured, a simple job, I'll change it. Then starts a long period of researching, because I am warned about doing so, then told it's okay because BOINC doesn't use that. >>> 1) Can you confirm VT-x has been enabled in the Bios ? Yes. >>> I suspect you are less confused than I am If only that were true. The value of that parameter is, right now, 1. A not uncommon occurance, a simple question, with a simple answer gets blasted into a lengthy thread. My actual question was answered, then mud got thrown onto the windscreen. Wave upon wave of demented avengers march cheerfully out of obscurity into the dream. |

I asked a very simple question and was given a very simple answer. End of thread, no? >>> Ah, so we were mudling up your problem. Frankly, yes, you were. What would you call it? Wave upon wave of demented avengers march cheerfully out of obscurity into the dream. |

If you go back to my original post, it is a 100% BOINC issue. Nothing to do with any project. I simply asked how to safely stop BOINC. This is the correct place for a question of that type. Wave upon wave of demented avengers march cheerfully out of obscurity into the dream. |
