Boinc version 7.14.2 (x64) widgets 3.0.1

- No projects listed to choose from in manager
- Trying to attach to Setiathome
- URL entry yields a "no work for your type computer. Do you want to add anyway?
- 'yes' yields brief "communicating w project" followed by "temporarily unavailable. try later."
- 'finish' yields the popup closure and "localhost" being replaced w "disconnected"

I have tried reinstalling, network reset, network settings changes, even copying Boinc from another machine where it works, all to no avail. I have to be missing something simple...
HELP!

Let's start with a couple of questions that may help get an answer...
First, where did you get the copy of BOINC you first tried from?
Second, you say you tried copying BOINC from another computer - SETI reports you haven't contacted their serves in about ten years, did you try to use a copy from one of the those old computers?
And, for now, have you allowed BOINC to communicate through any firewall that may be in the path to the outside world?

When you do manage to attach to project(s) 954MB available physical memory is rather on the low side for two cores. I know that SETI doesn't take up the amounts LHC@home or CPDN do but you are in danger of slowing down due to disk swapping there. I am curious as to what is taking up so much memory. only 954MB or Ram seems very low for a 4GB system. (Unless I am underestimating Windows 10's greed?)

SETI will install, but may produce errors on less than 1Gb free. However this issue appears while trying to connect to the servers. Windows 10 is very good(bad) at grabbing an excessive amount of memory - my work laptop with 4Gb installed frequently shows well under 1Gb free with "nothing" running, and then spend the first hour or more sorting its life out with endless paging until "something" is unloaded from memory and suddenly the free jumps to a more respectable ~3Gb.
One thing just crossed my mind - SETI has a weekly outage on Tuesdays - you didn't try to connect then by any chance?

Thanks for clearing that up Rob. I have been Windows free this century other than occasionally googling to sort out problems with partner's laptop so am a bit out of date on what Windows does with memory.

2) Tried with same results, removed it and reinstalled from Boinc website (again at Berkeley.edu website)
2b) I have a group (Dutchman Electronics since 22 Nov 2005, 6PC's, last contact today, main PC ID8480367, top 25% average), so don't know what you were looking at?
3) This may be the problem... I use Vipre security... I'm going to check other machine...No references to Boinc or Seti, but it does have a firewall 'learning' mode which monitors and requires an 'accept' / 'deny' on every new access. I'll give that a try and repost later today. I recall something here, although I don't recall if it was Boinc/Seti related. Will know shortly.

I just realized that the user I'm logged in as is jsdebruyn, where in the past and currently running machines they are JSDeBruyn. That may be a reason for the '10 years ago' note you made in your post Rob... assuming case sensitivity.

Do remember that BOINC consists of two components, the Client and the Manager. They communicate over TCP/IP, port 31416.

First check - is the client running? Dies boinc.exe appear in Windows task manager?
Second check - can that purely internal network traffic pass through your security device/software?
Third check - can boinc.exe (only) communicate externally over both port 80 and port 443 (http and https respectively)?

First) Client does not appear to be running. No Boinc.exe, but Boinc Manager is.
Second) Honestly, the way the Boinc manager acts (no project list populated and URL kicks out the warning "no work for your type computer" AND "Project not available, check later" AND Boinc manager status as disconnected lead me to believe it can't. Though 6 other machines on my network can... all using the same Vipre security software. I just tried the 'learning' mode and went through complete remove/reinstall of Boinc which made me manually 'allow' by rule at least a dozen network, port, protocol entries.
Third) Again, unsure.
You know, I have replaced my router since last I installed a Boinc and, for that matter, a new PC. I wonder if I need to 'introduce' my new PC to my Router?! I'll check and keep this post posted on results.

Concentrate on the first item first, then. If the client isn't running, nothing else can possibly work.

Review where the program has been installed. In this day and age, you will probably be running the 64-bit version. You would expect to find that in C:\Program Files\BOINC, although you are at liberty to change that during installation. Go to that (or your chosen) directory, and double-click on the boinc application. That may reveal installation errors like missing DLLs.

Router and configurable switches not the issue. At least no settings to allow or block this PC.
Added Boinc.exe as an app to Vipre's Firewall rules.
All = no joy...

But is boinc.exe running? That has to happen first.

By default, boinc.exe is started as a consequence of starting BOINC Manager. But mis-configuration can prevent that. You have to concentrate on getting it running first.

Well it took $30 and a 6 day wait and this machine now has 8GB of memory. No joy. I still think there is a problem with this particular mini PC not being recognized as a machine capable of Seti (or anything else Boinc related). I recall seeing somewhere that there is a 'machine type' identifying string that could be modified. My reasoning here is the nature of the error message, to the effect of, 'Project doesn't have work for your type of computer.' and then asking if I want to connect anyway. Recall that my initial problem is that there are NO projects from which to choose in the project list.

If boinc.exe is now running, you will be able to access the Event Log. Copy the first 30 lines or so, including all the startup and identification lines, and paste them here - we can take a look.

Boinc.exe is NOT running. That's the problem, when the manager offers to open/connect to a project, the list of projects does not populate and adding a project URL dies on the vine as 'no work for your TYPE of computer'. No local host connection = no boinc.exe running (at least as far as I can tell).

Best I can find as to any recent 'log' is from stdoutdae.txt. Here's the last attempt from near the end of that file:

Open BOINC Manager (it doesn't matter in this if the client runs or not), View, Advanced view, Options, Other options, General, if it isn't checked then check "Run the client?", Save. File->Exit->acknowledge to exit. Next restart BOINC Manager, does that start the client and keep it running?
Else open Windows Event Viewer (Start->Run, type eventvwr.exe and tap Enter, then wait for it to populate), in the Windows Logs, Application check through the Application Errors if there's any mention of what happens to boinc.exe, if you find something post that here.

In BOINC Data directory, stdoutdae.txt, anything of note in there?

How did you install BOINC? With your user account, or did you use "Run as administrator" on the installer? The latter is not advised, as this will cause all kinds of permission problems. An administrator account is needed for the installation of BOINC, but not the super user administrator. And did you check "Allow all users on this computer to control BOINC" in the installer?

No local host connection = no boinc.exe running (at least as far as I can tell).

Yup, that's a good takeaway. Conversely, boinc.exe has to be running in order for connection to be made.

So boinc has run, for just over two minutes. That behaviour can happen if the cooling system is completely broken (enough time to reach shutdown temperature), but it's unlikely in this case - (a) overheating usually crashes the whole computer, not just one app, and (b) with no science apps, there's not really much heat generated - not even benchmarks.

@other helpers - didn't we have a problem with one of those low-power Intel chips failing to run 64-bit SSL routines? Might be worth a try with a 32-bit BOINC while we look up 'Celeron(R) N4000 CPU'.
