Message 115499 - Posted: 26 Feb 2025, 11:08:56 UTC - in response to Message 115498.

In reply to Dave's message of 26 Feb 2025:
(the RTX 5xxx series that are rarer than hen's teeth and require you to sell body parts to be able to afford one)
Guessing there won't be that many crunchers affected till these become more widely available then.
The way things are going, April-May. Maybe.
The RTX 5070 is meant to be released March 6th, and their availability has been described as "... more than for the other models, but not abundant." So still bugger all from the sounds of it (and even less availability due to the issue of cards being released with less than the specified number of ROPs (Render Output Processors) having to be replaced as people find out they're affected & scream for an exchange unit).

If you're paying $5,000+ (When released the 5090 was starting at $4,500 (we can't get Founders editions here), now distributers are bundling cards with other crap they can't sell- so either the retailer pays the extra or goes without. And if they have to pay more, the customer has to pay more. Some are now charging $7,000 for an RTX 5090), you tend to expect to get what you paid for. Every last ounce of it.

And now then for some entertainment.

I'm my own grandpa.

And yup, it was a real song. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/I%27m_My_Own_Grandpa

I first heard that song way, way, back in the early 80's on a syndicated radio show here in the US called The Doctor Demento show.

I remember in my introduction to computing class my teacher handed out the lyrics to the song and asked us to draw a flowchart based on the song as an assignment.

Just reading a news article and in it was this-

... The Demon-Haunted World: Science as a Candle in the Dark, Carl Sagan, 1995
I have a foreboding of an America in my children’s or grandchildren’s time—when the United States is a service and information economy; when nearly all the key manufacturing industries have slipped away to other countries; when awesome technological powers are in the hands of a very few, and no one representing the public interest can even grasp the issues; when the people have lost the ability to set their own agendas or knowledgeably question those in authority; when, clutching our crystals and nervously consulting our horoscopes, our critical faculties in decline, unable to distinguish between what feels good and what’s true, we slide, almost without noticing, back into superstition and darkness.
The dumbing down of America is most evident in the slow decay of substantive content in the enormously influential media, the 30-second sound bites (now down to 10 seconds or less), the lowest common denominator programming, credulous presentations on pseudoscience and superstition, but especially a kind of celebration of ignorance.

Our AI future isn't conscious robots with lethal ambition. It might be worse.

Fair enough and I agree it will eventually be a project and cruncher issue rather than a BOINC issue. Just glad that CPDN where I am one of the volunteer moderators doesn't currently use GPU computing and at least in the short to medium term isn't likely to.

I don't know if it is relevant to the tasks that will be affected by this but CPDN used to blacklist computers that didn't have the 32bit libraries needed to run the tasks under Linux and crashed everything that came their way. They could if they spotted this get their machines back to accepting tasks by contacting the moderators. Now they have 64 bit tasks as well and I don't think they are doing that any more.
