I recently became the proud owner of a gratis POWERServer 590 machine, which will be running AIX 5.1 There is some conflicting info out there regarding running BOINC on AIX. Is there a STABLE port out there for AIX? I've never used an RS/6000 machine before, but I know it is a good number-cruncher. Are there specific projects whose calculations are better-suited for the POWER architecture? |

If there is a stable port, then it would be by a third party. And the better question might be which projects actually support that OS. Which of course is a question that I can't answer. :) Kathryn :o) |

Seti about died as it had no funds, so BOINC was made as an Open Source program to give Seti and other projects a footing into Distributed Computing. But I'll ask Dotsch if he'll pass by here. He's the person who knows most about possible port overs of BOINC to alternative systems and OSes. |

In the moment, AIX is not supported by any project. Two volunteers has ported BOINC and the old SETI 4.x to AIX. But Stefan had a lot of problems with the AIX port of the new SETI Enhanced application (5.x), so the AIX binaries was not released yet. I will ask Stefan about the furhter process of his porting work. Is it a solution for you, to install Linux on the RS6000 till there will be a AIX SETI application available ? - There are SETI ports available for Linux on Power CPUs. Btw. at the BOINC third party site (boinc.berkeley.edu/download_other.php) are the available BOINC and SETI ports listed. A overview about the supported platforms on the different projects is available at the BOINC wiki : http://boinc-wiki.ath.cx/index.php?title=Choosing_a_BOINC_Powered_Project |

I was able to compile the BOINC client and SETI Enhanced Mutlibeam application for AIX 5. The binaries are now avialable at www.dotsch.de/boinc. Special thanks to [AF>HFR>RR] jm@rc ! |
