I'm expanding my horizons moving out of Apple exclusively. My last Windows foray was Windows XP. The current system is Windows 11. Not sure what happened between XP and 11 but seems at least a little familiar. Running BOINC on Apple is easy as I understand it well enough. However, Windows is another matter.

I downloaded the 64 bit version with and without Virtual Box. Neither ran the full install. I'm currently getting the Error 2718. From what I understand BOINC uninstalls the older version and puts the newer on in its place. However, this is a new install with no prior version. (I did try the 32 bit version and it was not viable.)

The first attempt told me it could not find the boinc.msi file. I don't know where it should be and it was buried a bit deep in the file folder structure. I removed the installation file, download file and edited the registry to remove any residual BOINC items. A full system search did not bring up anything related to BOINC. The system was rebooted, redownloaded the program and now it pops up this Error 2718.

I found nothing newer than about 2012 or 2014 in the discussion groups on this. Either I'm not searching the correct keywords or it's simply not there. Any information, links, suggestions on what I'm ignorant on would be great.

Being absent Windows so long has left me feeling like a total newbie. Time to catch up. (I was a wizard at DOS through Windows 3.11 and Novell though. For all the good that does me today.)

Had no issues myself when installing BOINC on a new WIn11 laptop.
Downloaded current version of BOINC from here (8.0.2). Ran the installer with default settings. Done.
You haven't installed any 3rd party AV/anti-Malware software have you?

There is this for WIn10 Fix problems that block programs from being installed or removed.
Some posts say they used it with success on Win11, others say it fixed the problem programme, but corrupted others that required a repair installation of WIn11.

I'd suggest re-installing BOINC, then use Add/remove programmes to remove it. Then try re-installing it again, this time maybe try using Admin privileges? (right click on installer, Run as admin).

Installer Error 2718 apparently means that the Windows Installer Service is disabled, and needs to be re-enabled.
Here's how to do that: https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/all/windows-installer-has-an-error-code-2718/d3b50117-40be-4e7a-836e-9d8e2599865e

For all the other installer trouble, and if Grant's proposal didn't work, see this BOINC FAQ.
