I just installed vista x64 on my new machine. I download and installed boinc (5.10.28) from the main download page. I keep reading that there is a x64 version of boinc for download but for the life of me I cannot find it on the download page. Does anyone know where I can locate this and is it worth using the x64 version? Thanks

http://boinc.berkeley.edu/download_all.php has 5.10.28 for Windows x64. Advantage is you can run 64-bit applications from projects that have it (in the extreme case of ABC@Home, for example, you compute three times faster with 64-bit).

I guess I missed it because it said "WinXP64+". Ok so I just need to uninstall the x86 version and install the x64 version. I have already joined several projects using the x86 version. How can I move that data over after I installed the x64 version so I don't lose any workunits, etc?

Uninstalling BOINC doesn't delete any workunits, etc.

yea,but the x86 version installs to C:\Program Files (x86)\Boinc. I am assuming the x64 version will install the C:\Program Files\Boinc so I will need to copy some files over. Do I just copy all the files over after I install the x64 version? I didn't want to accidentally copy some x86 files over to the x64 install.

Good point. I think the installer is smart enough to copy the files by itself from the 32-bit directory, but you should copy them manually to be sure.

Well I the x64 install went fine and BOINC seems to be running great. However, I now have a new problem. Whenever boinc is running I cannot launch Windows Media Center. When I try and open it, it is as if nothing happens. I waited for a few minutes and tried again with the same results. As soon as I stopped the BOINC service the Media Center application launches. This is a major problem for me as this machine is my main media center. My XP media center worked for years with no problems. I've tried running BOINC under various user accounts including the one I am currently logged in under and the administrator account. I have UAC disabled so that's not the issue. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Ok, I did a lot of testing last night. I found that by limiting the processor usage to 70% I could open Vista x64 media center with no problem. I then set it back to 100% and chose the option to pause while computer is being used and to resume work after one minute. This works for now but is obviosuly not ideal. When I press the button on my remote to launch media center it suspend the projects and media center launches. After one minute boinc then resumes. Unfortunately every time I adjust the volume with my remote it will suspend also. Anyone have any ideas on what the problem is?

How many CPUs (Cores) do you have, how many have you set for BOINC to use and which projects is this for? Also which BOINC version? How much RAM?

And now, what if you set the amount of CPUs BOINC can use to one less than it is set to now?

I have a Intel Core2 Duo E6850 which consist of two cores. I am using the maximum number of cores just like it was on my older XP Media Center which had a Pentium D 830 (2 cores also). Boinc is set to use at most 4 processors since I have a quad core at work. The "XP" Media Center worked for years and is still working nicely with BOINC running 24x7. The projects I am joined to are as follows:

World Community Grid
Rosetta
Tanpaku
Malaria Control
Boincsimap
