A silly question. Is it possible to run BOINC as a service under Win if a user's password is blank? (Yeah, I understand about security issues clearly but just want to mark a point here). Thanks. |

No. To install BOINC as a service you need an administrator account with password. |

Thanks. Is it a forced limitation of BOINC? If so, may be some optimized clients allow to avoid this? |

It's not the client that does it. It's part of the Windows Installer. I haven't seen any of the optimized clients come complete with an installer. Only as a zip file, or executable archive. |

It's not the client that does it. It's part of the Windows Installer. Sorry, some misreading from my side. I meant not an installation process, but a service startup. I just checked - it's possible (if you're setting a password before the installation and clearing it up after). Thank you. |

BOINC 6 will do it differently. There, when you install BOINC, it will open a command line window and ask you for a password to be set. If you set none, it will make the two BOINC accounts, boinc_master and boinc_project. From ClientSetupLogicSix: The installer offers two modes: 'Graphics compatible' and 'Secure'. Graphics compatible installations is the same as the single-user installation of the v5. The manager will be responsible for launching the core client, and all applications will be launched in the same security context as the user who logged into the system. This allows users to see graphics from older as well as newer science applications, or projects with long running tasks which won't complete for a while. If the user selects Secure, the core client will run as a service. Two user accounts and two groups will be created: Users: * boinc_master The core client runs under this account. * boinc_project Apps and graphics app run under this account. If the computer being installed upon is a domain controller, then the account names will have the computer name appended on to them. Groups: * boinc_admins Members of this group can change the configuration and protection settings for the BOINC client (for example the GUI RPC password and host list) and can also run the BOINC Manager and screensaver. * boinc_users Members of this group can run the BOINC Manager and screensaver. |
