I'm setting up a dual-boot XP Pro & XP Pro 64 system and would like to run projects on either system using a shared BOINC folder between the two systems. I would be using an app_info.xml file to define which apps to run and they would be compatible to execute with either OS. Note that this is a dual-boot, not a VM configuration. Therefore, only one system at a time would be running. The main question is whether this would work or would the systems walk on each other when I change which one I boot from? |

This is not an advisable configuration, you should have a seperate BOINC directory for each OS. It will probably work with projects that do not use homogenous redundancy though. BOINC WIKI ![]() ![]() BOINCing since 2002/12/8 |

Thanks for the feedback. The reason I would prefer not to go the separate folder route is because the alternate OS may not be active for days at a time and WUs could likely time-out. However, I suppose with S@H having such ridiculously long deadlines, I could set my cache to minimum and not use a backup project. |

There is a chance that the intermediate files (checkpoints) aren't compatible between platforms. |

I've done this and it ran successfully. However, I used the 32-bit client for both OS'es, so that I didn't really have to do anything to the BOINC configuration, other than to make sure that they both used the same folders accessible by both OS'es. Good luck. |

I went ahead and did just that and I haven't had any problems (yet...knock on wood). I plan to migrate most, if not all programs from the XP Pro 32 to XP Pro 64 OS, at which point, I will not be using the older version any more (I hope). I would then install the 64-bit Seti science app and disable BOINC on the old OS. [edit] I do not intend to install a 64-bit BOINC client unless the science app requires it. |
