Hello,

I have been running BOINC on Linux Debian for about a week now. I uploaded BOINC via the package manager.

For some reason, after trying to install a physical graphics card in the PCIe slot in my PC and after finding that the card did not work I removed it.

BOINC is now not working properly!!!!

As I am new to LINUX The only thing I can think off is to uninstall BOINC and then re-install.

Could anyone please advice me as how to uninstall and so on. What might have happened that BOINC does not work properly. Could there have been a problem with static electricity due to the card change?

I think if you installed through the package manager you can uninstall through there as well.

But when you say it doesn't work, what exactly is happening or not happening?

The BOINC window does not come up when I try and run the program. If it does then it is a blank window with only BOINC in the top left hand corner. At this point the BOINC window freezes for no apparent reason.

I cannot understand how trying to put in a graphics card (very carefully I might add) has effected the running of BOINC. Having said that it has done.

Could be coincidence. What you describe is that BOINC Manager is starting up, but the BOINC client isn't.

Did you shut down the PC when you installed the graphics card and took it out again? What about it didn't work/ Did you ever get into your OS when you had the card installed? Was BOINC at any of those times running?

When you open client_state.xml, what does it say you have for graphics card in between the <accelerators></accelerators> tags?

Yes, definately closed down the PC and shut it off. When I put the new graphics card in I started up as normal but didn't see anything on the screen as I had not installed the driver. I realised at this point that I would have to install the new graphics driver and uninstall the old one before putting in the new card. I removed the graphics card (XFX Nvidia 8400GS) and replaced monitor wire in the normal VDU output.

I restarted the computer which was a normal boot up and recall that BOINC must have started properly. It was only a few hours later that I noticed that BOINC had crashed and I could not start it up.

Right click on it, then open with... use the standard option there. Probably Kate.
Or just double click it and your browser will open it. Since you don't need to edit anything, it doesn't matter.

When you put in the new graphics card, did you pass by in your BIOS to disable the on-board graphics card? The graphics card will usually show something in the OS, but not if the BIOS is still saying to use the on-board graphics card instead of any other 9external) graphics card. :-)

The first step is finding where it is...

I think it's on /var/lib/boinc or something like that.
