I'm trying to install 6.5.0 on an XP home edition. Protected folder ON all users control OFF. Every time I log on a limited account boinc errors saying I need to add the user to the boinc group. Are you aware this feature is not available in XP Home, only XP Pro? Tried to allow all users control, same deal, tried 6.4.5 and same deal. What's going on? It worked fine in 6.2.19 EDIT: I forgot to add that work IS crunched in the background service, so that's good, I just get this damn manager error and cant access it. |

...Are you aware this feature is not available in XP Home, only XP Pro? I think it's available in XP home, when booted in protected mode. Not quite sure, has been a while... Gruß, Gundolf Computer sind nicht alles im Leben. (Kleiner Scherz) ![]() |

Not sure what you mean by protected mode, never seen this in XP. But Microsoft explicitly describes on their page that user groups is NOT a feature on XP HOME. |

Protected mode is to deal with the security features in Windows Vista. It's what Microsoft calls a service. The Big BOINC 6 Answer Thread All of this works on XP Pro, if not on XP Home. Note that 6.5.0 is a test version. Expect problems. |

Note that 6.5.0 is a test version. Expect problems. 6.5.0 is only testing a new GUI (BOINC Manager). The underlying client is the same as 6.4.5 ... and 6.4.5 has a problem that I reported to the developers already, it won't add 'limited user accounts' to the boinc_users and boinc_projects groups. tested this myself, sent a report accompanied with a lot of screen grabs to the developers. But with everyone on seasonal holiday I wouldn't expect any changes that quickly. If you run into trouble, go back to 6.2.19, or if you can do it in your OS, add your user account to the appropriate groups (using the administrator account). |

Not sure what you mean by protected mode, never seen this in XP. But Microsoft explicitly describes on their page that user groups is NOT a feature on XP HOME. You can reach it by pressing f8 while booting. I did it with XP home a long time ago to do exactly that (set rights). @Les Bayliss: Nah, not the BOINC protected install ;-) Gruß, Gundolf Computer sind nicht alles im Leben. You can reach it by pressing f8 while booting. That would be "Safe mode". I'll try it when I get a chance, but I think it still doesn't give you access to the sort of user-level security options that XP Pro has. |

No, I haven't. I sent a report of it directly to the developers, they're looking into it. In the mean time, I may have found a workaround. What you could try is the following: - Restart computer into Windows Safe Mode (Keep hammering F8 after you cleared the BIOS and before you see the Windows Logo, when upon the menu choose Safe Mode). - Select Start > Run - Type %allusersprofile% in the Open text box. Then click OK. - Right-click the Shared Documents folder, and select Properties. - Click the Security tab. - Select Everyone in Group Or User Names, and then select Allow next to Full Control in the Permissions. (if possible, check that the admin account you're using is a member of the boinc_admins, boinc_projects and boinc_users groups. Normal accounts should only be members of the latter two groups) - Click Advanced, and select Replace Permission Entries On All Child Objects With Entries Shown Here That Apply To Child Objects. - Click OK, click Yes, and then click OK to close the Shared Documents Properties dialog box. - Select Start > Run. - Type msconfig in the Open text box. Then click OK. The System Configuration Utility will open. - In the System Configuration Utility, select the General tab. - Select Normal Startup - Load All Device Drivers And Services. Then click OK. - Restart the computer. - Restart BOINC. |

Hello, I haven't tried the work around since I forgot about this thread, but this is still an issue with the latest betas(.20 etc). The only difference is that now when you log a limited user account it WILL crunch in the background which is good BUT it always gives an error on login with an annoying popup bubble that boinc cannot connect to the client. Works fine on the admin account. |
