Thread 'Boinc Manager won't connect to localhost'

Running Boinc Mgr v6.4.5 on a Vista Ultimate machine with quad-core cpu. The machine was fine when I went to work this morning but was locked up when I got home from work so had to power down and restart. Since then the Boinc Mgr won't connect to localhost. All tab panes in Boinc Mgr are completely empty even though the ProgramData\BOINC subdiretory seems to still contain all my project info. I've already unenstalled, rebooted and reinstalled v6.4.5 but no change in symptoms. I notice in the Task Manager when I start the Boinc Mgr I see Boincmgr.exe and Boinc.exe start up but then Boinc.exe drops out after a few seconds. Boincmgr.exe continues to run until a dialog box comes up saying [i}"BOINC Manager is not able to connect to a BOINC client. Would you like to try to connect again?"[/i]. If I click <YES> Boincmgr.exe continues to run but Boinc.exe does not show up again. All other internet related programs are functioning fine (IE7, Outlook, etc.). In fact, this post was made using the affected computer. I see nothing in the system application event viewer which is obviously Boinc related. I also do not see anything in McAfee to indicate a blockage imposed by the firewall. Any suggestions? ID: 22305 ·

You don't see that BOINC is enabled to pass through the firewall either? boinc.exe and boincmgr.exe need to be able to communicate to each other on port 31416m so they should be white listed, or in your trusted zone. No, it was a bug in BOINC, since fixed, which didn't allow it to start if the account_.xml file or one of the other projects specific .xml files was above 63KB in file size. But as said, that's been fixed since that time. And the 'rogue project' we found it with was QCN... ;-) ID: 22313 ·

But the posts in the thread I linked, and the matching Hydrogen@home killing BOINC Manager? that you cross-linked (in both directions), suggest at least the possibility that a project or projects might be implicated. Hence my question to GLRumble. Seemed as least as good a bet (well, a better bet, as Gundolf pointed out) as the firewall suggestion. Edit - maybe this will help. ID: 22316 ·

I'l try to address each question . . . Boinc is configured to pass thru the firewall. McAfee shows "BOINC client", "BOINC Manager for Windows" and "BOINC Screensaver" all with Full Access. They oridinally showed as "Outbound-Only Access" but I changed them last night to see if that would fix the problem." It did not fix the problem. No ports have been manually added to the open/block service ports feature so all ports should be set as default. There are no sites or services being blocked by my router either. I have never connected to QCN on any of my computers. I do have another computer which is connected to Hydrogen but it has been set to "no new tasks" for months and has not performed any crunching on H2 during that time. The problematic computer does not connect to H2 so I don't think that has anything to do with it. This computer actively crunches Seti, Pirates (when there's work) and abc. It's connected to 6 other projects as well but those were set to "no new tasks" before the problem began. In case it matters, I do run BoincView v1.4.2 multiple times per day on the problematic computer to keep tabs on all my 13 computers. All the computers have their own remote_hosts.cfg and gui_rpc_auth.cfg file for this purpose. All computers are attached to my home network but none of the other computers are having any Boinc related problems at all. Now, for the std*.txt logs. This is the 1st I've ever looked in these things so I'm no expert here. Nothing unusual in stdoutdae.txt I don't think. Last modified: 8 Jan 2009, 0:22:51 UTC I decided to uninstall Boinc, deleted both BOINC subdirectories, rebooted and reinstalled. Boinc v6.4.5 is working again although I had to reconnect to my previous projects and all host statistics seem to have disappeared. No biggie, this quad is my faster computer and it's more important to just get the thing crunching again. Something odd I noticed, when I reattached to the Seti project I got seti and astropulse files to crunch. I did not notice having any astropulse files before the system crashed the other night. Related somehow to my problem? Thanks for all your suggestions. Too bad I had to do a clean install rather than being able to repair what I had. ID: 22338 ·
