Over the past couple of days I have started to upgrade to the new 6.4.5 from 5.10 versions. Problem. On each machine that I have attempted this - It does not transfer over the projects. Everything is lost and I have to start over attaching new projects. I have not been using the standard directory settings.. Instead since I like all my BOINC stuff in a single sub directory. I have been using the following program files\boinc program files\boinc\projects In turn - BOINC creates project files\boinc\projects\projects The second projects directory is not a real problem, just a pain, I have scripts set up for upgrading optimized apps and have to modify these scripts. But like I mentioned, the real problem is when upgrading all the attached projects just disappear, New HOST CPID's are created each time - I am installing as protected mode for service installation. I have tried upgrading without uninstalling the older version.(BOINC shut down) I have tried upgrading without uninstalling the older version (BOINC still running) I have tried upgrading after uninstalling the older version. Still have the same issues. |

In Version 6, you are no longer allowed to have the 2 parts in the same location, as you are trying to do. Please read this FAQ: The Big BOINC 6 Answer Thread PS You probably HAVEN'T lost your previous work. It's most like sitting where you left it, with the new BOINC unable to find it now. When installed correctly, this work would have been automatically migrated to the new location. |

In Version 6, you are no longer allowed to have the 2 parts in the same location, as you are trying to do. I'll check the big book, But they are not in the same location.. one is boinc\projects the other is boinc\projects\projects (the second projects is created by the install program) It works fine this way, it is just that the current projects are not copied over from boinc\projects to boinc\projects\projects but I can not use C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\BOINC\ For BOINC - |

It works fine this way, it is just that the current projects are not copied over from boinc\projects to boinc\projects\projects BOINC projects expect their directories in \BOINC\projects\, not in yet another subdirectory. If you can't use the default location, use just any other location, like C:\BOINC Data for your data directory. Due to security problems (mostly in XP SP3 and Vista) BOINC cannot use a data directory in the Program Files directory, as Windows does not allow that programs write to that directory (or any of its subdirectories). |

...but I can not use C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\BOINC\ You need not use it, you just must not use a subdirectory of the BOINC DATA directory as project directory! So choose for the data directory a top level directory named BOINCDATA for example, and all will be fine. Gruß, Gundolf PS: If you save the account_*.xml files before installation and copy them to the new DATA directory before connecting to the net, then you won't get new hostIDs each time. And if you search your local disks, you might find the original ones, including all old workunits. [edit] beaten again :-) [/edit] Computer sind nicht alles im Leben. (Kleiner Scherz) ![]() |

Works better than "program files\boinc\projects\projects" anyway.... Thanks for the tip |

Ok, I don't know what version of Windows you're running, but the advice was: "Use anything *except* .\program files\anything\anything else". It's the "program files" tree which is protected in Vista, Windows 7, and presumably anything later than that. You don't explain why you can't use C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\BOINC\ (the Windows XP default), but you should still be able to make C:\ProgramData\BOINC\ (the Vista default) even if you're not running Vista. |

I have 1 vista machine, and it is going to be wiped out. Worst OS around. I use XP-64 on most my boxes, and have no plans on upgrading to Microsoft anything in the near future. I understand that \program files\.... is protected in Vista.. And it makes sense that BOINC installs the way it does now. Lowest common denominator. Vista. Thanks for the input. But still, Everything BOINC on my systems will go into the \program files\boinc\.... I will just have to deal with it... Gives me a good excuse to clean a couple of years of old junk in those directories anyway... |
