When I am running boinc only and looking at the windows task manager, the cpu usage varies from 0% to 100% and back again about every 2 seconds permanently. The performance tab shows about 30 peaks and troughs all the time is this normal? or have I got a problem I can supply a screenprint of this if required but cannot add it to this message thanks in advance for any solution paul |

What's the setting of "Use at most XX percent of CPU time" in your preferences? If it's not 100%, then that explains the behaviour of BOINC: when 50%, BOINC let the application(s) run for 1 second and then stops for one second. For 33% it would be 1 second run and 2 seconds pause, and so on. Gruß, Gundolf PS: You should set it to 100% because some projects generate runtime errors otherwise. Hello I found another advantage of setting it to 100% when I used Tthrottle when it was set to 60% it showed a temperature of around 55-63 degrees and now shows at only 36%. and has not gone above 38 in the last 24 hours I wonder why the default is 60 not 100 as this looks better all round? regards Paul |

hi Jord When you hit clear to reset all local preferences, it goes back to the global settings defined for your account on project websites, not to any setting hard-coded into BOINC itself. |

Local preferences override web preferences. Local preferences, when started and saved by clicking OK, use 100% as default. Web preferences use 100% as well, unless changed on some project. Check that you're using the correct venue that you changed the preferences on. There are 4 venues, default, home, work and school. Changing the preferences on the school venue, while the computer uses the home venue, will not change the preferences for that computer. Now, no need to believe me. Preferences for BOINC 6.6, default values give the default web-based preference values used. You're interested in line 452, which says: $p->cpu_usage_limit = 100; Same for the override preferences (and I just tested it by clearing mine, it definitely says to use 100% of the CPU). |

Hi thanks for clarifying I find the 60% came from primegrid and wonder if they have 60% as the default as I do not remember changing it. it now stays at 100% regards Paul |
