After I get enough CPU and CUDA projects, I go to boinc manager and turn off the network activity and lock the firewall. Why does the boinc manager has to be connected at all times? I don't want to leave my computer connected to the internet when the boinc manager is the only program running. I prefer to block the internet connection with the boinc is running while I am sleeping. My computer is running 24/7. I have a up to date firewall and internet security suite software, when I am not using the internet, I just block the connection for security reasons. Why can't the boinc manager wait until all the projects are completed then I will connect to the internet and get new tasks? |

Why can't the boinc manager wait until all the projects are completed then I will connect to the internet and get new tasks? First off, BOINC Manager is just a GUI that makes it easier for you to give commands to the client. Second, you can tell BOINC to use the internet at only those hours you specify. To do so, either set the computational preferences at any project for: "Use network only between the hours of x and y" Or set these preferences through the Advanced local preferences in BOINC Manager (these work only for the computer you set them on). Set those to the hours you're behind the computer and it having internet anyway. |

And don't forget to select "Network activity based on preferences" in the manager's Activity menu. Gruß, Gundolf |

I have entered the hours in the preferences for Network. Even using the general options, I put in 1 day to the Connect about every option inbox and the work buffer. The Boinc still wants to connect to the internet and after a while, the manager would stop all tasks and I get a blank white screen. After that happens, I am unable to connect to the internet and have to restart the computer. This has happened too many times. I don't like to keep the internet connection enabled when the only major program running is the boinc manager while I am sleeping. I need to know which ports the boinc manager uses and will have to add those ports to the firewall. |

Did you select "Network activity based on preferences" in the manager's Activity menu (advanced view)? [edit]If you do, you'll see "Suspending Network activity - time of day" in the Messages tab of BOINC manager.[/edit] |

You could, of course, just close the computer down when you sleep. BOINC doesn't need to run 24/7, it can learn to adjust doing work in smaller amounts during the hours the computer is running. BOINC (boinc.exe) needs to be able to connect to the internet through TCP ports 80 and 443 |
