I'm currently getting this message - 'BONIC Unable to connect to Core Client'. Would this have any connection to the fact that when I was running 'Windows Microsoft Update', the following update failed - 'Security Update for SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 3 (KB970892)' Have you any ideas how I can re-install this update, or remove it from 'Add/Remove Programs', as I can't see it there? Here is MS page for that update: Security Update for SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 3 (KB970892) As for the "BOINC unable to connect to core client" message: Is the client running? Check if boinc.exe is running under Task Manager. Is port 31416 allowed through your firewall? |

Please advise how I check & find this Port. Just make sure that boinc.exe, boincmgr.exe, boinctray.exe, boinccmd.exe and boinc.scr are listed in the Allowed tab in your Windows firewall. No need to add ports, although for Windows Vista and above you may need to enable boinc.exe to act as a server. |

I have Windows XP and have Windows Firewall turned off, as I use Nortons, not currently sure where to check in Nortons, have to hunt around. Currently two processes are running under Processes in Windows Task Manager (WTM) - boincmgr.exe, boinctray.exe and BOINC Manager is running in Applications, under WTM. John F. |

Currently two processes are running under Processes in Windows Task Manager (WTM) - boincmgr.exe, boinctray.exe and BOINC Manager is running in Applications, under WTM. You're missing boinc.exe, the actual client. Boincmgr.exe is just the BOINC Manager, a GUI which makes it easier for you to give commands to the client. By default, starting Boinc Manager should start the client. But perhaps that it is blocked by your AV/firewall. It wouldn't be the first time that Norton would block these silently. Apropos, which version of Norton do you use? And which BOINC version? |

=============================================================================== OK, this is getting a bit annoying, I have just spent a month trying to work out why clicking on a PDF file crashes my IE - resolved by a automatic download of the latest version of Adobe Reader (V9.2.0) and now this - rather fire fighting. =============================================================================== I have been using BONIC for about two years and never had any problems, as I use it for crunching data, while I am at work (as a software engineer). Perhaps I ought to say that 'Security Update for SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 3 (KB970892)' did not install correctly, even from the below link - it failed at the end. Previous versions have installed OK, the last being in January. As requested, the Nortons versions I have are Nortons Antivirus (V16.7.2.11) and Nortons Systemworks (V12.0.1 Build 1). I tried removing BOINC and after removing BONIC, via. 'Add/Remove Programmes', I re-installed it - V6.6.38, which is the version I now use. I then went into the BONIC folder and clicked on 'BONICMGR.EXE', which opened up the GUI and which displayed 'Retrieving Current Status'. I then clicked on 'BONIC.EXE'. Initially, it opened up a blank Command Prompt window, which then closed. Repeating this, a number of commands flashed on the Window, which then closed, but nothing was displayed in the GUI. During the displaying of the commands, it open up the BONIC Debugger (V6.6.38), as it said an 'Unhandler Exception Detected' was detected. I then opened up a blank CMD window and located the BOINC directory. I then ran 'BOINC.EXE' with the Command 'BOINC.EXE > B.txt', but only part of the output was displayed - as follows. (Not too sure how I can display all of the output.) =============================================================================== 15-Oct-2009 16:29:37 [---] Starting BOINC client version 6.6.38 for windows_intelx86 15-Oct-2009 16:29:37 [---] log flags: task, file_xfer, sched_ops 15-Oct-2009 16:29:37 [---] Libraries: libcurl/7.19.4 OpenSSL/0.9.8k zlib/1.2.3 15-Oct-2009 16:29:37 [---] Data directory: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\BOINC 15-Oct-2009 16:29:37 [---] Running under account John 15-Oct-2009 16:29:37 [---] Processor: 2 GenuineIntel Intel(R) Core(TM)2 CPU 4300 @ 1.80GHz [x86 Family 6 Model 15 Stepping 2] 15-Oct-2009 16:29:37 [---] Processor features: fpu tsc pae nx sse sse2 mmx 15-Oct-2009 16:29:37 [---] OS: Microsoft Windows XP: Home x86 Edition, Service Pack 3, (05.01.2600.00) 15-Oct-2009 16:29:37 [---] Memory: 1.99 GB physical, 5.26 GB virtual 15-Oct-2009 16:29:37 [---] Disk: 232.88 GB total, 194.07 GB free 15-Oct-2009 16:29:37 [---] Local time is UTC +1 hours 15-Oct-2009 16:29:37 [---] No CUDA-capable NVIDIA GPUs found 15-Oct-2009 16:29:37 [---] No coprocessors 15-Oct-2009 16:29:37 [---] Not using a proxy 15-Oct-2009 16:29:37 [rosetta@home] URL: http://boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta/; Computer ID: 891028; location: (none); project prefs: default 15-Oct-2009 16:29:37 [climateprediction.net] URL: http://climateprediction.net/; Computer ID: 904187; location: (none); project prefs: default 15-Oct-2009 16:29:37 [Einstein@Home] URL: http://einstein.phys.uwm.edu/; Computer ID: 1598866; location: (none); project prefs: default 15-Oct-2009 16:29:37 [lhcathome] URL: http://lhcathome.cern.ch/lhcathome/; Computer ID: 9713664; location: (none); project prefs: default 15-Oct-2009 16:29:37 [Milkyway@home] URL: http://milkyway.cs.rpi.edu/milkyway/; Computer ID: 27814; location: (none); project prefs: default 15-Oct-2009 16:29:37 [orbit@home] URL: http://orbit.psi.edu/oah/; Computer ID: 10522; location: (none); project prefs: default 15-Oct-2009 16:29:37 [SETI@home] URL: http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/; Computer ID: 4271822; location: (none); project prefs: default 15-Oct-2009 16:29:37 [Cosmology@Home] URL: http://www.cosmologyathome.org/; Computer ID: 30621; location: (none); project prefs: default 15-Oct-2009 16:29:37 [climateprediction.net] General prefs: from climateprediction.net (last modified 07-Sep-2008 17:12:41) 15-Oct-2009 16:29:37 [climateprediction.net] Host location: none 15-Oct-2009 16:29:37 [climateprediction.net] General prefs: using your defaults 15-Oct-2009 16:29:37 [---] Reading preferences override file 15-Oct-2009 16:29:37 [---] Preferences limit memory usage when active to 1018.75MB 15-Oct-2009 16:29:37 [---] Preferences limit memory usage when idle to 1833.75MB 15-Oct-2009 16:29:37 [---] Preferences limit disk usage to 50.00GB 15-Oct-2009 16:29:37 [---] Running CPU benchmarks 15-Oct-2009 16:29:37 [---] Suspending computation - running CPU benchmarks 15-Oct-2009 16:29:37 [Cosmology@Home] [error] File params_092809_220555_2.ini has wrong size: expected 1911, got 0 15-Oct-2009 16:29:37 [Cosmology@Home] Started download of params_092809_220555_2.ini 15-Oct-2009 16:29:39 [Cosmology@Home] Giving up on download of params_092809_220555_2.ini: file not found Unhandled Exception Detected... - Unhandled Exception Record - Reason: Access Violation (0xc0000005) at address 0x004350ED read attempt to address 0x00001CFO Engaging BOINC Windows Runtime Debugger... =============================================================================== John F. |

Since this morning I got the same error message. Yesterday I installed Windows7 and moved Boinc to the new system without any problem. This morning I got an security update from Microsoft. After this update Boinc is crashing with exactly the same error message. I assumed that the error was caused by MS. But that is not the case. I saw that that I had also a very similar error message before from Cosmology@home. So I removed all comology@home file in the ProgramData directory. After this Boinc was working as normal. Cosmology@home is causing an error, this is crashing boinc if you have a special configuration of your server. Werner |

Thanks. So is the problem being looked at by the BOINC administrators, as Cosmology@home is causing the problem? I suppose I could do what Werner did, by removing Cosmology@home. John F. |

If you look at my last reply, the download shows that a file is missing in Cosmology@Home - '15-Oct-2009 16:29:39 [Cosmology@Home] Giving up on download of params_092809_220555_2.ini: file not found' As a software engineer, I'm not really sure an application should crash if a file can't be found, unfortunately it happens all the time..... I just tested with BOINC 6.10.13, the Beta release candidate. It downloads all of the Cosmology parts without problem for me. So could you test that version please and see if you can reproduce the crash? |

From my point of view this is a problem in the IPC, the only point I can imagine. If the client is sending a maleformed IPC message, or the server process has a problem with this type of message. After reconnecting to cosmology@home it is working without any problem. I have to wait for the next missing file. Werner |

Thanks, I have just downloaded BONIC 6.10.13 and run it. BONIC now runs OK, without any problems. Though, clicking on 'BONIC.EXE' I don't see anything in the CMD window. I assume that the problem is now solved. Thanks again. I just tested with BOINC John F. |
