I just upgraded from boinc_6.6.41_x86_64-pc-linux-gnu.sh to boinc_6.10.17_x86_64-pc-linux-gnu.sh. And suddenly my GPU is not detected anymore: "No usable GPUs found" Argh! 2 Lines above: "cDriverGetVersion() missing from NVIDIA library" I guess the "No usable GPUs found" is a follow up result of the missing "cuDriverGetVersion()" call, isn't it? So, do I need a newer NVIDIA driver? BOINC 7.2.42 (x86_64) on Linux Ubuntu 16.04 (64 Bit), AMD APU 7850K 3.7 GHz, 32 GB RAM. |

Since you don't say what driver you are using now, nor which Linux version, it's hard to tell. |

Ah, and what Nvidia GPU? if anything, you could try the 190.42s. |

9400. BUt hey, the GPU was correctly detected and used in the former 6.6.4 version! BOINC 7.2.42 (x86_64) on Linux Ubuntu 16.04 (64 Bit), AMD APU 7850K 3.7 GHz, 32 GB RAM. |

I am also having the same problem after "upgrading" to BOINC 6.10.18 from 6.6.41. This is a newly built system, Windows 7-64 bit and has been running BOINC 24/7 for a couple of weeks. GTX 275, driver 191.07 I will downgrade to 6.6.38 and see if that fixes it. At the moment, I think there is a bug in 6.10.18. 11/9/2009 8:11:21 PM Starting BOINC client version 6.10.18 for windows_x86_64 11/9/2009 8:11:21 PM log flags: file_xfer, sched_ops, task 11/9/2009 8:11:21 PM Libraries: libcurl/7.19.4 OpenSSL/0.9.8l zlib/1.2.3 11/9/2009 8:11:21 PM Running as a daemon 11/9/2009 8:11:21 PM Data directory: C:\ProgramData\BOINC 11/9/2009 8:11:21 PM Running under account boinc_master 11/9/2009 8:11:21 PM Processor: 2 GenuineIntel Pentium(R) Dual-Core CPU E5200 @ 2.50GHz [Intel64 Family 6 Model 23 Stepping 10] 11/9/2009 8:11:21 PM Processor: 2.00 MB cache 11/9/2009 8:11:21 PM Processor features: fpu tsc pae nx sse sse2 pni 11/9/2009 8:11:21 PM OS: Microsoft Windows 7: x64 Edition, (06.01.7600.00) 11/9/2009 8:11:21 PM Memory: 4.00 GB physical, 7.99 GB virtual 11/9/2009 8:11:21 PM Disk: 297.99 GB total, 274.82 GB free 11/9/2009 8:11:21 PM Local time is UTC -6 hours 11/9/2009 8:11:21 PM No usable GPUs found 11/9/2009 8:11:21 PM GPUGRID Application uses missing NVIDIA GPU 11/9/2009 8:11:21 PM GPUGRID Missing coprocessor for task 99-KASHIF_HIVPR_twomons_ba2-62-100-RND7308_0 11/9/2009 8:11:21 PM GPUGRID Missing coprocessor for task 60-GIANNI_BIND_650-20-100-RND5019_1 11/9/2009 8:11:21 PM Not using a proxy |

Still no good. Next I will try downgrading the driver to 190.38 (Note: I did NOT upgrade the driver to 191.07 when upgrading BOINC to 6.10.18. It was running stable with 191.07 and BOINC 6.6.41) 11/9/2009 11:41:09 PM Memory: 4.00 GB physical, 7.99 GB virtual 11/9/2009 11:41:09 PM Disk: 297.99 GB total, 274.43 GB free 11/9/2009 11:41:09 PM Local time is UTC -6 hours 11/9/2009 11:41:10 PM No CUDA-capable NVIDIA GPUs found 11/9/2009 11:41:10 PM No coprocessors 11/9/2009 11:41:10 PM [error] Application uses nonexistent coprocessor CUDA 11/9/2009 11:41:10 PM GPUGRID [error] No application found for task: windows_intelx86 671 cuda; discarding 11/9/2009 11:41:10 PM GPUGRID [error] No application found for task: windows_intelx86 671 cuda; discarding 11/9/2009 11:41:10 PM GPUGRID [error] State file error: result 99-KASHIF_HIVPR_twomons_ba2-62-100-RND7308_0 not found for task 11/9/2009 11:41:10 PM Not using a proxy 11/9/2009 11:41:10 PM Version change (6.10.18 -> 6.6.38) |

Nope - that's not it either. Driver 190.38, BOINC 6.6.38 doesn't work either. I give up until someone can give me an idea of something else to try. 11/9/2009 11:55:08 PM Starting BOINC client version 6.6.38 for windows_x86_64 11/9/2009 11:55:08 PM log flags: task, file_xfer, sched_ops 11/9/2009 11:55:08 PM Libraries: libcurl/7.19.4 OpenSSL/0.9.8k zlib/1.2.3 11/9/2009 11:55:08 PM Running as a daemon 11/9/2009 11:55:08 PM Data directory: C:\ProgramData\BOINC 11/9/2009 11:55:08 PM Running under account boinc_master 11/9/2009 11:55:08 PM Processor: 2 GenuineIntel Pentium(R) Dual-Core CPU E5200 @ 2.50GHz [Intel64 Family 6 Model 23 Stepping 10] 11/9/2009 11:55:08 PM Processor features: fpu tsc pae nx sse sse2 pni 11/9/2009 11:55:08 PM OS: Microsoft Windows 7: x64 Edition, (06.01.7600.00) 11/9/2009 11:55:08 PM Memory: 4.00 GB physical, 7.99 GB virtual 11/9/2009 11:55:08 PM Disk: 297.99 GB total, 274.06 GB free 11/9/2009 11:55:08 PM Local time is UTC -6 hours 11/9/2009 11:55:08 PM No CUDA-capable NVIDIA GPUs found 11/9/2009 11:55:08 PM No coprocessors 11/9/2009 11:55:08 PM Not using a proxy |

The problem is shown in the 4th line down: Running as a daemon In other words, you've installed BOINC in "protected mode", (formally known as "service mode"). As has been mentioned many times, you CAN'T run gpu's in this mode! See also this FAQ. |

Thank you. I feel like such a fool as it says it won't work with Vista (and I know implied Windows 7 too) right in the text next to the check box. My only excuse is that I have some Windows XP boxes too and as everyone knows the daemon service works just fine there. 11/9/2009 11:36:29 PM Starting BOINC client version 6.10.18 for windows_intelx86 11/9/2009 11:36:29 PM log flags: file_xfer, sched_ops, task 11/9/2009 11:36:29 PM Libraries: libcurl/7.19.4 OpenSSL/0.9.8l zlib/1.2.3 11/9/2009 11:36:29 PM Running as a daemon 11/9/2009 11:36:29 PM Data directory: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\BOINC 11/9/2009 11:36:29 PM Running under account boinc_master 11/9/2009 11:36:29 PM Processor: 2 GenuineIntel Intel(R) Core(TM)2 CPU 6700 @ 2.66GHz [x86 Family 6 Model 15 Stepping 6] 11/9/2009 11:36:29 PM Processor: 4.00 MB cache 11/9/2009 11:36:29 PM Processor features: fpu tsc pae nx sse sse2 mmx 11/9/2009 11:36:29 PM OS: Microsoft Windows XP: Professional x86 Edition, Service Pack 3, (05.01.2600.00) 11/9/2009 11:36:29 PM Memory: 2.00 GB physical, 3.85 GB virtual 11/9/2009 11:36:29 PM Disk: 153.38 GB total, 145.07 GB free 11/9/2009 11:36:29 PM Local time is UTC -6 hours 11/9/2009 11:36:29 PM NVIDIA GPU 0: GeForce GTS 250 (driver version 19038, CUDA version 2030, compute capability 1.1, 1024MB, 470 GFLOPS peak) 11/9/2009 11:36:29 PM Not using a proxy I will now search the forum to see if there is any possibility to get the daemon service working on Vista / Win-7. I suspect the answer is "no" and is due to some MS issue. Thank you for the prompt answer. I am happily running my GPU now. |

It IS an MS issue, as explained in the FAQ that I linked to. :) |

Hello, I'll write to this older thread since I have a similar issue on my test system (Ubuntu 9.10): I installed BOINC normally so it is installed as a daemon. After that I downloaded the actual linux package (6.10.36) and made the necessary changes so it is used instead of the "original" one. Also I installed the CUDA drivers. Now, when the system starts, BOINC reports no GPU: So 14 Mär 2010 15:55:59 CET Starting BOINC client version 6.10.36 for x86_64-pc-linux-gnu So 14 Mär 2010 15:55:59 CET log flags: file_xfer, sched_ops, task So 14 Mär 2010 15:55:59 CET Libraries: libcurl/7.18.0 OpenSSL/0.9.8g zlib/1.2.3.3 c-ares/1.5.1 So 14 Mär 2010 15:55:59 CET Data directory: /var/lib/boinc-client So 14 Mär 2010 15:55:59 CET Processor: 2 GenuineIntel Intel(R) Core(TM)2 CPU 6600 @ 2.40GHz [Family 6 Model 15 Stepping 6] So 14 Mär 2010 15:55:59 CET Processor: 4.00 MB cache So 14 Mär 2010 15:55:59 CET Processor features: fpu vme de pse tsc msr pae mce cx8 apic sep mtrr pge mca cmov pat pse36 clflush dts acpi mmx fxsr sse sse2 ss ht tm pbe syscall nx lm constant_tsc arch_perfmon pebs bts rep_good pni dtes64 monitor ds_cpl vmx est tm2 ssse3 cx16 xtpr pdc So 14 Mär 2010 15:55:59 CET OS: Linux: 2.6.31-20-generic So 14 Mär 2010 15:55:59 CET Memory: 1.96 GB physical, 3.10 GB virtual So 14 Mär 2010 15:55:59 CET Disk: 22.01 GB total, 16.30 GB free So 14 Mär 2010 15:55:59 CET Local time is UTC +1 hours So 14 Mär 2010 15:55:59 CET No usable GPUs found But when I do a "sudo /etc/init.d/boinc-client restart" it IS found: So 14 Mär 2010 17:41:59 CET Starting BOINC client version 6.10.36 for x86_64-pc-linux-gnu So 14 Mär 2010 17:41:59 CET log flags: file_xfer, sched_ops, task So 14 Mär 2010 17:41:59 CET Libraries: libcurl/7.18.0 OpenSSL/0.9.8g zlib/1.2.3.3 c-ares/1.5.1 So 14 Mär 2010 17:41:59 CET Data directory: /var/lib/boinc-client So 14 Mär 2010 17:41:59 CET Processor: 2 GenuineIntel Intel(R) Core(TM)2 CPU 6600 @ 2.40GHz [Family 6 Model 15 Stepping 6] So 14 Mär 2010 17:41:59 CET Processor: 4.00 MB cache So 14 Mär 2010 17:41:59 CET Processor features: fpu vme de pse tsc msr pae mce cx8 apic sep mtrr pge mca cmov pat pse36 clflush dts acpi mmx fxsr sse sse2 ss ht tm pbe syscall nx lm constant_tsc arch_perfmon pebs bts rep_good pni dtes64 monitor ds_cpl vmx est tm2 ssse3 cx16 xtpr pdc So 14 Mär 2010 17:41:59 CET OS: Linux: 2.6.31-20-generic So 14 Mär 2010 17:41:59 CET Memory: 1.96 GB physical, 3.10 GB virtual So 14 Mär 2010 17:41:59 CET Disk: 22.01 GB total, 16.29 GB free So 14 Mär 2010 17:41:59 CET Local time is UTC +1 hours So 14 Mär 2010 17:41:59 CET NVIDIA GPU 0: GeForce 8600 GT (driver version unknown, CUDA version 2020, compute capability 1.1, 255MB, 76 GFLOPS peak) How can this be? Perhaps it's the access rights for the BOINC user to the /dev directory. Gruß, Gundolf Computer sind nicht alles im Leben. (Kleiner Scherz) ![]() |

Either that, or a slow/late loading video driver. |

Thanks. Since the driver is found on restart, I'd think the it's the driver. Can I make sure BOINC is started afterwards? cu/2 Torsten |

seemingly a change in /etc/rc2.d did it: I couldn't identify what is the driver in question, so I renamed "S20boinc-client" to "S80boinc-client". 2 restarts later the client still detects the GPU, so I believe it's solved. Otherwise I'll come back here. ;) cu/2 Torsten |

too bad - today I've seen "no GPU's" again... :( So, is there a way to further delay the start of the BOINC client or otherwise make sure the driver is completely loaded before? cu/2 Torsten |

So, is there a way to further delay the start of the BOINC client or otherwise make sure the driver is completely loaded before? Manually start BOINC after your OS has fully loaded, or add the start-up logic to a batch file that will only start the client after so many minutes. BOINC does come with a --start_delay option, but this is for applications only, not for the client itself. |

So, is there a way to further delay the start of the BOINC client or otherwise make sure the driver is completely loaded before? I tend to forget manual actions. :-P Normally I only see those issues only in Windows (not knowing which services start in which order); I thought *IX would handle it better... :( cu/2 Torsten |

I edited something into my answer above. How to add a start-delay in a batch file? Ping 127.0.0.1 300 times will add a 5 minute delay. So something like this: Rem Start delay BOINC @ECHO OFF Rem pinging localhost 300 times for 5 minute delay ping 127.0.0.1 /n 300 /path/to/BOINC-binary/boinc-client /path/to/BM-binary/boinc-manager |
