BOINC installed OK on my new Windows 7 64-bit installation, but keeps stalling.
The data files are stored in a second disc, and I find that the folder containing the files keeps switching to read-only mode. I'm assuming that this is the reason BOINC halts.
I'm generally somewhat confused anyway by Windows 7 file protection system, because I've always assumed that the files that I create and own will always remain open to me!
Any ideas? There's a dual AMD cpu plus 4 GByte memory and many GBytes of spare disc space.
I've run BOINC under Windows 2000 and XP for nearly 10 years!

How do you know this?
Any messages to corroborate this statement?
You also don't say which BOINC version, but let's assume it's 6.10.17. 64bit version?

The data files are stored in a second disc, and I find that the folder containing the files keeps switching to read-only mode. I'm assuming that this is the reason BOINC halts.

The read-only sign on directories is normal. It's been doing that since Windows XP. Although the directory may have a read-only attribute on it doesn't mean that the files in the directory do. Have you checked individual files? Are they read-only?

In that case you may just not have permissions to run BOINC. You either installed it as admin and run it as a user that isn't allowed to run it, or your admin account isn't in the boinc_master group. In either case you should uninstall & reinstall and make sure to reboot at the end of the installation.

I've run BOINC under Windows 2000 and XP for nearly 10 years!

Please don't exaggerate. :-)
BOINC's beta test started in December 2002, it's been out of beta since January 2005. Seti Classic was not BOINC.

Thanks for your reply, Ageless. I wasn't bragging about the time I've been running BOINC - at the age of 70, it just seems a long time. I actually registered with seti@home on 27 Dec 2000. Almost 10 years..... The process looks the same even if the name has been changed!

The version of BOINC that I downloaded was 6.10.17.

When I say BOINC stalls, when BOINC is selected, the usual window with the Projects/Tasks/Transfers/etc tabs appears, which is blank. Then a pop up window with the message "Communicating with BOINC client. Please wait..." appears and nothing happens.

The Task Manager shows that BOINC Manager as an application is running, but in the Processes tab, no computation is going on. Hence my rather loose term "stalls".

I'm aware of read/write settings for files. I just find it stange in Windows 7 to click on a folder in Explorer to be told "You don't have access" - THAT didn't happen in XP. I'm hoping to find a way into the "Documents and setiings" folder!! I will reinstall BOINC and reboot and advise. But it may be tomorrow...
Many thanks

Do you have a lot of tasks cached (in queue) in the client? If so, then BOINC Manager cannot easily make contact with the client to show all of them in real time.

The developers have therefore added a new button in the Tasks tab in BOINC Manager->Advanced view->Tasks tab. Clicking "Show active tasks" will only show those tasks that are running and waiting to run, not those that are ready to start.

The button will change to "Show all tasks" at that time. Do know that any work downloaded and not yet started will not show due to this button setting (so there's no ghost tasks).

I'd say, try that button first.

Hello guys,
I used BOINC on my computer under win XP Pro 32, and upgraded to win 7 Pro 64.
Reintalled Boinc manager, joigned to account manager and recover data without any problem. BUT each time I log off windows, Boinc loose settings about projects: I have to re-attach a project (for instance Seti@home) each time I log in, and moreover the jobs are lost, new ones are uploaded and started.
Seems there is really something wrong with permissions somewhere, but in thsi configuration, Boinc is not compatible with 7 x64.

When you attach to projects through an account manager, you don't need to attach separately to the project through BOINC Manager. Just sync with the account manager.
