No shortcuts on desktop works to programs on my external USB harddrive. Over 800 DLL's and other stuff missing according to CCCleaner. Rebooted several times, but now someone is going to tell me that was an error. :-) Thunderbird refuses to run claiming its running already although no job process is seen in Task Manager. Running Win 7. I fear major virus in BOINC for Windows. |

I fear major virus in BOINC for Windows. Then we'd all be infected and we'd all have crashing computers. Since we don't, it's something on your computer. Where did you download BOINC from? If the normal download site, then it isn't infected with anything. How did you install BOINC? Did you download it first, then start the installer, or did you try to start the install while downloading? Have you already checked your system with a virus checker? Various firms offer free (online) scanners: Housecall from TrendMicro Kapersky file scanner Norton AVG free Virus Total (scans individual files with 30+ scanners). Have you checked for other malware? No, I won't sit through Hijack This scans, there are other forums for that. It can also just be that your USB drive is (going) broke(n). Have you checked its status? |

That's a very mature attitude. How's that going to help you, exactly? Or weren't you looking for help, only for blame? |

Well, before installation - no problem - after installation - big problems. Looks to me the installation and the problems are severely connected. That's the essence to focus on. |

Some computers just don't seem to work well with BOINC. Best if you un-install it. |

You still haven't answered any of the questions I posted. You haven't even given any undeniable proof that your copy of the BOINC installer was infected with whatever. You haven't told us where you got it from. You haven't told us if your computer is infected with something, I'd have expected you to have done a full scan by now and given the names of all the nasties your system apparently harbors. By following the logic of your second post, you want to make us believe you are no computer noob, yet we haven't seen any proof of that. All you said was that you installed BOINC, you lost some DLL files and that therefore BOINC must be infected with something that does that. No log files, no print out of any scans, nothing to corroborate your claims. And even in the slightest chance that there was some infection in the installer, why didn't UAC and all your sophisticated and very up-to-date anti-virus and other anti-malware programs and all your firewalls say anything about it? What happened after you put back your last restore point, did you then scan what kind of bad could be on the system? You did put back your restore point, didn't you? If not, why not? |

I would also expect to have seen the output from a chkdsk Z: /F by now (or whatever your external drive is). |

BOINC being infected by a virus isn't very likely. After compilation each binary is code signed, if the binary is modified Windows will throw a warning about the binary being tampered with. Besides, I keep my network clean. A case in point, a few months ago a random bank charge appeared in my bank account (I didn't know a retailer I bought something from had been hacked), it caused me to reformat all the machines I regularly use as well as run a whole network audit. I informed the S@H project and other projects I have SSH keys for which in turn caused them to regen SSH keys and audit. In the end it turned out that everything was okay and it was another set of systems at a retailer that were hacked into, but I didn't know that at the time. Having suffered many a hard drive death over the years, I would say that your hard drive is dying. Most malware in circulation these days is either used in botnet C&C or in ransom ware. Botnet C&C software doesn't delete files as they want to go unnoticed so they can continue to do things in the background. Ransome ware doesn't delete things as there is no profit in it. ----- Rom BOINC Development Team, U.C. Berkeley My Blog |
