I recently purchased a new computer with the hopes that I'd be able to run BOINC and other applications simultaneously. I installed BOINC, not as a service as other messages have suggested, and basically nothing happens. Tasks have been downloaded and they sit, not running. I have started and stopped BOINC, rebooted, reinstalled and nothing seems to work.

I am running:

Windows 7 Professional 64-bit
RAM: 6 GB DDR3
Processor: 1.6GHz Intel Core i7-720QM
Front-side bus: 1333mHz
Graphics card: Nvidia GeForce GT 230M (NB10P GE) discrete 1024MB

There is over 275GB of drive space available. The computer is new, so I have not yet loaded many other applications.

Is anyone successfully running BOINC on this type of machine? Any suggestions on what I should look at?

There are several "Suspends" in BOINC: at the Project level, (but you're getting work); at the full BOINC level, (in the menu); and at the individual WU level, (in the Tasks tab, against each WU).
If none of these are set to Suspend, then I'd suggest the following:
1) In the menu, click Suspend. (Always a good idea before exiting from BOINC.)
2) In the menu, click Exit.
3) Re-start BOINC.
4) In the menu, set BOINC to Run always.

This will provide you with a clean set of messages in the Messages tab.
5) Click the Copy all messages button, and paste the results here.

Then we can see were it's getting up to.

Go to any of the projects you're attached to, Your account, Computing preferences and edit them. Then change the following:

Suspend work while computer is in use? Yes -> No.
Suspend GPU work while computer is in use? Yes -> No.

Save changes to the web site.
Next open BOINC Manager->Advanced view->Projects tab->Select the project you just changed the preferences on and click the Update button on the left menu.

If you ever looked at the local preferences and clicked OK on your way out, they'd be saved and used immediately. You may not want to use them, so also (and just to be sure) go BOINC Manager->Advanced view->Advanced->Preferences and click the Clear button.

Thank you for the suggestions.

I have reinstalled BOINC and am trying the suggestions. First thing that appears to be happening is a message window that says:

Communicating with BOINC client. Please wait ...

The window has an "Exit BOINC Manager" button and a "Cancel" button.

So far, this window never goes away and comes back if I cancel or exit and restart BOINC Manager.

Make sure that boinc.exe, boincmgr.exe and (in case you use it) boinc.scr are allowed to pass through the firewall on that computer. If you need to set ports, TCP 31416.

The message essentially says that the GUI cannot connect to the client through RPC. It'll try and try again.

Thanks for the suggestions! I finally got it working and it is humming along nicely. Here's what I did to get it working:

1. Uninstalled the BOINC manager
2. Located the "ProgramData" directory and manually deleted everything in it.
3. Rebooted my computer
4. Reinstalled BOINC manager
5. Rebooted my computer
6. This time when I started BOINC Manager, it had me attach to my project again (the same as when I first installed it). Other uninstall and reinstalls did not have me reattach to the project.
7. Reattached to my project.
8. And it began running as expected. Already finished several tasks - yea!

Again, thank you.
