Hi, Just installed this new release on Mac OS X 10.6.3 using my admin account. I then ran AddRemoveUser in Terminal to add my non-admin user to BOINC list of users allowed to run BOINC mManager. When I move over to my non-admin account, I get a popup box indicating "BOINC ownership or permissions; please reinstall BOINC. (Error code -1200)" with an OK button. Click the OK and BOINC manager goes away. I reboot. Reinstall BOINC 6.10.43 answering the resulting pop boxes the same (yes for non-admin accounts, no for screen saver) and reboot again. Log into my non-admin account again and get the same popup box when BOINC manager starts out of my Login Items. Any ideas of how to resolve this problem. Thanks Craig Dudley |

First, make sure you are using the latest build of AddRemoveUser (dated 22 March 2010) from here. If that doesn't solve your problem, try running the Uninstall BOINC utility included with the BOINC installer, then install again. Charlie Fenton BOINC / SETI@home Macintosh & Windows Programmer |

Hi Charlie, I uninstalled BOINC, rebooted, and installed BOINC again. I did click Yes in the 1st popup about letting non-administrative users run BOINC and No for the screen saver question. I did download the AddRemoveUser and run it. But I noticed even though the .zip file was dated 22 March, 2010 (as you indicated), the AddRemoveUser program inside the .zip file was dated 10 November, 2009. Is that correct? But I still have the same problem with my non-administrative user trying to run BOINC. Any other ideas? Thanks Craig Dudley |

I did download the AddRemoveUser and run it. But I noticed even though the .zip file was dated Yes, that's the one. Any other ideas? Well, I'll try to figure out what's wrong: First, does BOINC Manager work when you run it from your admin account? Second, please log in to your admin account, open the Terminal application (/Applications/Utilities/Terminal) and enter the following 3 commands. You might want to copy and paste these; they are case-sensitive: dscl . -read groups/boinc_master dscl . -read groups/boinc_project ls -al "/Library/Application Support/BOINC Data/projects" Please post the output you get in terminal. You can copy and paste from the Terminal window, or use the Export Text As ... command in the Shell menu. You can either post the results here or send them to me in a private message. I hope this helps. Well, this all looks normal, so I'm stumped so far. I see you have 3 accounts: admin, snaguru and testsacsi. Are the last 2 both non-admin? If so, do you get the same error on both? You didn't tell me: does BOINC Manager work when you run it from your admin account? Would you be kind enough to log in to the non-admin account which is giving you trouble and send me the results from the following command from the Terminal application: ls -alR "/Library/Application Support/BOINC Data/projects" If you get a permissions error in Terminal, please try the same command in Terminal from the admin account, but send me the output from both runs. Hello Craig, Please do run the tests and answer the questions from my previous post. I have updated the AddRemoveUsers utility again; please download the new version from here and let me know if it helps. Charlie Fenton BOINC / SETI@home Macintosh & Windows Programmer |

Hi Charlie, I posted the output of the commands you requested from a system where I don't have the problem. I did re-download AddRemoveUser and ran it. This seemed to clear up the problem and now my non-admin user can run BOINC Manager. I'm glad that worked. But I still am trying to figure out why the installer didn't do the right thing in the first place, so I can fix it for other users. Would you be kind enough to run the following command in Terminal and post the result? ls -al /Users Thank you! Charlie Fenton BOINC / SETI@home Macintosh & Windows Programmer |

Hi Craig, Thanks for the response. Was this from the system where you were having the -1200 error? I see a number of users listed in addition to admin and snaguru. (In an earlier post you indicated that you also have a system where you didn't have the problem.) Talking only about the same system that previously had the -1200 error, are these 3 users all names by which someone can log as a user: ftp, ppepin, sacsitest (in addition to admin and snaguru)? If you installed BOINC answering Yes to allow non-admin users to run BOINC, then I would expect "dscl . -read groups/boinc_master" to show all of these users (except Shared), but it showed only snaguru and admin. Also, I don't know if it makes a difference, but the command "ls -al /Users" should have an upper-case U. Thanks again for your assistance in helping us understand this issue. I am using (optimized) BOINC 6.10.43 on a Windows XP computer. I am running two projects, SETI and Rosetta. The SETI is currently working just fine and is getting enough WU ahead to go well past the Tuesday shut down (although it may not have happened this week - dunno). The Rosetta has a problem, which suspect is BOINC related, not Rosetta. I have asked for 4 days WU in advance and seem to be getting it. But with Rosetta, if I have (for example) 4 WU 2 or 3 WU will progress toward completion, in turn. I have only one processor and only claim one processor in my profile (parl at SETI, not Ross Parlette at Rosetta). This became a problem recently when two WU were due soon and a WU which was not due for days and days was receiving processing time. I suspended it until the two urgent WU were complete, u/l, and reported. I don't really want to have to baby-sit my BOINC projects. SETI is progressing fine, in that each WU is started, computed (sharing w/ Rosetta), and completed. As soon as it is completed, the processor switches to Rosetta or to a fresh SETI task. This is the behavior I have seen in the past and the behavior I expect to see. I'm not sure why I'm not seeing it with Rosetta. The point of d/l multiple WU is to have a back-log but not to process them all at the same time. I have asked this question in the Rosetta and SETI fora, but they don't seem to be able to help me, since scheduling WU is really up to BOINC. Thanks, Ross ps: where do I log in on the home page? r |
