Hi, Would some one like to explain why I have to use a 3rd party website to manage my projects? What is wrong with simply writing the information to a file on my hard drive? |

If something goes wrong on your computer, you'll lose all that information. But if you do not want to use an account manager, then don't. Just attach to the projects with the Attach to project option. Then all information does get written to disk. |

If something foes wrong on your computer, you'll lose all that information. Not if the information is written to a file I can save on a separate disc. Providing a Save and Load option in Boinc is simpler, quicker and easier to code and maintain than creating a completely new website. It also means I don't have to rely on a third party, which could close at any time. |

Providing a Save and Load option in Boinc ... What information do you want to save? Do you know that BOINC already does this for work units on which it's working, and it's only the "finished product" that gets returned to the project? Alternate managers are really only for people with dozens of computers and dozens of projects, who want to be able to "bulk manage" their work. For the rest of us, the built-in BOINC manager is quite sufficient. |

Providing a Save and Load option in Boinc ... The information required by Boinc when I click the Add project button. |

That's the file: account_projectname.xml, which is stored in the BOINC (data section) folder. Plus lots of info scattered through client_state.xml about each project and the work units currently showing in the Tasks tab of the BOINC manager. And if you want to backup any of this, you have to include EVERYTHING from the basic BOINC folder on down through all of the sub-folders. |
