i really hate to make a new post, especially one as long as this but here goes, i've been running boinc for about 2 years now, i don't really have a problem, i built a fairly decent desktop for gaming, then played nothing more complicated than solitaire, so i got into boinc, but there are a ton of things i don't understand, n i'm pretty computer literate so i wanted ta just ask for help, don't get too mad at me for prolly noob questions, but boinc seems overly complicated to me, so here goes. do all of the projects have a screensaver, if so where are they? i liked the rosetta and seti ones, (this was my only reason for starting boinc in the first place) are there ne other cool ones? i'd still like a screen saver other than boinc floating around, (thats really boring) ok enough about that, what project(s) are the best for my machine to get the most out of it, what will best utilize my hardware? which projects will my machine make the most contribution to, is there ne way i can get more out of it without major upgrades? should i join a team? which one? do i do enough work to bother? i'm not planning on going out an upgrading ne time soon right now i'm running gpu grid, aqua, seti, rosetta, and milky way, it seems like seti and rosetta are a huge waste of time, according to work done, i've only ran gpugrid, miky way and aqua for a short time but they have way more "work done" i don't understand this at all. how should i set my preferences to maximize output, i would like to be able to watch a movie w/out boinc suddenly causing a huge slow down, is there ne way other than snooze or to make it wait 2 hours to run? i've got more ?'s but those are the main ones for now, any help i can get will be appreciated. i really jus wanna contribute as much as possible w/ an idle machine, but get the impression i might just be wasting electricity Simple hardware list This is my first system so dont be too hard on me, i was happy it worked at all lol video cards: 2 nvidia GeForce 9800 GTX+ 512 mb cards running in sli mode, but i don't have the sli bridge place, (lost it some where, but can get another if it would help). driver version 260.99 Directx version 11 Motherboard: Gigabyte nForce 750a sli Processor AMD Phenom 9950 II Black edition quad core processor 2.60 ghz Windows 7 Ultimate, x64 Ram 5.0 gb of ram, (4.75 gb useable) power supply 750 w boinc version 6.10.58 more detailed hardware list (dunno if this helps) Motherboard GIGABYTE GA-M750SLI-DS4 AM2+/AM2 NVIDIA nForce 750a SLI ATX AMD Motherboard Processor AMD Phenom 9950 Agena 2.6GHz Socket AM2+ 125W Quad-Core Black Edition Processor Ram G.SKILL 5GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500) Dual Channel Kit Desktop G.SKILL 1GB 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500) Desktop) Power supply hec Zephyr MX-750 750W Continuous @ 40°C ATX12V V2.2 / EPS12V V2.91 SLI Certified CrossFire Certified Active PFC HYBRID-SLI ... video cards: 2 nvidia GeForce 9800 GTX+ 512 mb cards running in sli mode, but i don't have the sli bridge place, (lost it some where, but can get another if it would help). driver version 260.99 Directx version 11 cooling Giant fan blastin into the side w/ bits of string and tape holding it in place, kina garbage but effective, never overheats |

i really hate to make a new post, especially one as long as this but here goes, i've been running boinc for about 2 years now, i don't really have a problem, i built a fairly decent desktop for gaming, then played nothing more complicated than solitaire, so i got into boinc, but there are a ton of things i don't understand, n i'm pretty computer literate so i wanted ta just ask for help, don't get too mad at me for prolly noob questions, but boinc seems overly complicated to me, so here goes. Perhaps you'll find some answers at the BOINC FAQ Service. do all of the projects have a screensaver, if so where are they? i liked the rosetta and seti ones, (this was my only reason for starting boinc in the first place) are there ne other cool ones? i'd still like a screen saver other than boinc floating around, (thats really boring) No, not all projects have a screensaver, especially not the ones with GPU applications (for obvious reasons). You'll have to look at the project sites for more info. should i join a team? which one? do i do enough work to bother? i'm not planning on going out an upgrading ne time soon Joining a team would change nothing at your computer's performance. right now i'm running gpu grid, aqua, seti, rosetta, and milky way, it seems like seti and rosetta are a huge waste of time, according to work done, i've only ran gpugrid, miky way and aqua for a short time but they have way more "work done" i don't understand this at all. SETI has been down for several weeks. They are just starting up again. nebody? ne ideas? ne suggestions at all? hello? The problem might be that you are asking project-specific questions and this site here has no projects at all. Gruß, Gundolf Computer sind nicht alles im Leben. (Kleiner Scherz) ![]() |

hey, thanks so much for the reply, i've already spent a good deal of time looking for the answers to a lot of these questions on google etc, w/out getting very far, that's why i finally asked here, kina thought of this as a sort of central vortex, a primary location if you will where general questions could be answered. i apologize if i seem lazy for not finding these answers, i'm not in this for points, but was under the impression they (avg wok done) would be a reasonable barometer as to project selection, but i don't have a great deal of time to endlessly peruse the sites of 40 some projects (are there more?) in search of elusive answers. To be honest i find a good deal of it very confusing, and was sort of looking for a good place to start, wish there was a boinc project to organize all the info into a more approachable system lol. guess i was just hoping to find some "set it and forget it" style help, I still have no idea what projects are best suited for my machine, if the ones i'm running are a waste of time and electricity, or even if i have the correct drivers to run my machine at it's maximum potential, i'll keep looking. Thanks again for the help. |
