Downloaded 6.12.33 the normal way but it failed to finish install. Works okay witb XP3. I had to rename BOINC application data folder to BOINCOLD to save data for later. Then I deleted 6.12.26 using the control panel uninstall. Once I uninstalled, I ran the download for 6.12.33 and it completed okay. Then rename BOinc data folder to BOINCnew and BPOINCOLD to BOINC. Started Boincmgr and everthing is working great. |

Trying to install 6.12.33 on my 64bit i7 Windows 7 system results in an unexpected shutdown. Very nice. I can't seem to find any mention of anyone else with similar problems. Poor show. |

Trying to install 6.12.33 on my 64bit i7 Windows 7 system results in an unexpected shutdown. Very nice. Unexpected shutdown of what? the Boinc Install Program? Boinc Manager? the Boinc Client? Or Windows? If no one else has reported this problem, then you're the first, It's only a Poor Show that you haven't followed Ageless's 'when requesting help' post: When you're requesting help on these forums, please be so kind as to give information about which BOINC version you run (See Help->About BOINC in BOINC Manager), about your system, the projects you are attached to and what you have done so far to try to remedy the problem. I am currently using 6.12.26 without issue. Upon running the 6.12.33 installer it goes as far as starting to install with the progress bar, then my machine restarts. No BSOD, no error message, nothing. I re-downloaded the installer just in case it had been corrupted to make sure it wasn't that causing the issue and the same thing happened again. On the first occasion I had to use a previous restoe point to get me machine to even start up. I have looked through the PC event log and can not find anything to indicate the cause of the problem. Here are the first few lines from the BOINC Manager log as per the pasted instructions: 08/07/2011 11:29:20 | | Starting BOINC client version 6.12.26 for windows_x86_64 08/07/2011 11:29:20 | | log flags: file_xfer, sched_ops, task 08/07/2011 11:29:20 | | Libraries: libcurl/7.19.7 OpenSSL/0.9.8l zlib/1.2.5 08/07/2011 11:29:20 | | Data directory: C:\ProgramData\BOINC 08/07/2011 11:29:20 | | Running under account John 08/07/2011 11:29:20 | | Processor: 8 GenuineIntel Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU 920 @ 2.67GHz [Family 6 Model 26 Stepping 5] 08/07/2011 11:29:20 | | Processor: 256.00 KB cache 08/07/2011 11:29:20 | | Processor features: fpu vme de pse tsc msr pae mce cx8 apic sep mtrr pge mca cmov pat pse36 clflush dts acpi mmx fxsr sse sse2 ss htt tm pni ssse3 cx16 sse4_1 sse4_2 syscall nx lm vmx tm2 popcnt pbe 08/07/2011 11:29:20 | | OS: Microsoft Windows 7: Home Premium x64 Edition, Service Pack 1, (06.01.7601.00) 08/07/2011 11:29:20 | | Memory: 5.99 GB physical, 11.98 GB virtual 08/07/2011 11:29:20 | | Disk: 279.36 GB total, 208.23 GB free 08/07/2011 11:29:20 | | Local time is UTC +1 hours 08/07/2011 11:29:20 | | ATI GPU 0: ATI Radeon HD 5800 series (Cypress) (CAL version 1.4.1417, 1024MB, 2720 GFLOPS peak) I apologise for not giving all this information at first but I was rather irked that my main machine was bombing while trying to install a relatively minor update. I have never ever encountered this kind of crash with any other software. |

On the first occasion I had to use a previous restoe point to get me machine to even start up. Yeah, I had something similar with the 6.13.0 installer. I did see a BSOD though (Stop: 0x000000f4) and went through the whole System Recovery thing. I'd never seen that before, so it was a new experience for me. :-) But I don't think it's the BOINC installer that did this, it would've happened with any Windows installer you used. The error seems to be a corruption in the registry. It is reasonably easy to fix and overcome: Uninstall BOINC through Programs->Uninstall a program, and then install the new BOINC. There is no need to run any registry cleaners. Believe me, that will only make things worse. |

Jord, thanks for the info. I will give it a try when I have the time to spare. I have a registry cleaner that is pretty good, but I always back up before every clean up. |

I had a chat with one of the developers. He also feels it's the Windows Installer that does this, and then more precisely the part that makes a restore point. All Windows Installer files (MSIexec.exe and the .MSI files) will make a silent restore point when you install any program with such an installer. It can happen that corruption occurs at making the restore point. When you then next run any program using the Windows Installer, it'll fall over this corrupt entry and instant BSOD or reboot the system. Therefore, that it happened to you (and me) with the BOINC installer is mere coincidence. It could've happened with any program you went to install that uses a Windows Installer. |

Hmmm. Seems like I'm going to have to reformat this machine. It's rebooting right left & centre. I can't even run the uninstaller from safe mode without a restart. Ah well. At least all my data is on a 2nd drive as well as being backed up in the cloud. Another weekend spent tinkering! Oh joy. Thanks for all the help. At least I'll get rid of all the spurious programs etc. |
