When I tried to open BOINCManager in OS X Lion the following appeared: "You are currently not authorized to manage the client. Please contact your administrator to add you to the 'boinc_master' user group." I am the administrator, but I can't create this group because I'm told "Name is used by another user." Every other user on the machine has the same problem - nobody seems to be the user who controls 'boinc_master'. Advice and compassion would be welcome. |

When you get a permissions error alert, you will need to run the BOINC installer again after upgrading to Lion. |

I am also having the same problem. I have tried reinstalling BOINC and I still get an error message: "BOINC ownership or permissions are not set properly; please reinstall BOINC. (error code -1200)" What else can I try? |

When you get a permissions error alert, you will need to run the BOINC installer again after upgrading to Lion. Was the installer tested under Lion? ![]() |

Yes, by the developer for the Mac. Both 6.12.33 and the 6.13 versions. But I forwarded this thread to development. I suspect Charlie is either on vacation and therefore only at certain times available, or he's melted... ;) |

Answer from the developer: Any time that running the BOINC Mac installer doesn't solve a problem like this, the next thing to try is to run the "Uninstall BOINC" application which comes with the installer (in the "Extras" folder), then run the BOINC Installer again. The uninstaller does not remove the BOINC Data, so nothing should be lost. |

Thanks for all the assistance. I solved my problem by trashing the existing app and installing the latest version. BTW, there was no visible sign in the Users list in System Preferences (or anywhere else!) of a Boinc-related group. Still isn't, but it works so I'm definitely not "fixing" anything else. |

It won't be there. Apple protects you from it, because it doesn't have a password. ![]() |

I still haven't solved my similar/same problem. I've used the uninstaller and reinstalled 6.12.33 and I still get: "BOINC ownership or permissions are not set properly; please reinstall BOINC. (error code -1200)" What can I try? |

SOLVED: Well, after repairing permissions and rebooting, it seems to work OK now. |

I reinstalled an earlier version (6.10.58) but I don't know if that was necessary. Then I used Disk Utility to 'Repair Disk Permissions' and rebooted. When the computer started up it asked for permission for BOINC to accept incoming network connections which I "allowed". Then it just started up as normal. I haven't reinstalled 6.12.33. I'm just glad to have BOINC working again! It could be that a reboot was all that was necessary? It was the first reboot since installing Lion. |

I have repaired permissions in OS X Lion and find that I have to reinstall Boinc every time I reboot the computer. My work is saved and I can resume but this is a real pain. I hope there is another work-around . . . |

I have repaired permissions in OS X Lion and find that I have to reinstall Boinc every time I reboot the computer. My work is saved and I can resume but this is a real pain. I hope there is another work-around . . . Two questions: Which version of BOINC are you using? What is the error number in the alert fromBOINC saying that permissions are not set properly? I downloaded the latest version of BOINC and although it seems to run it runs so slowly that every time I try to select it, close it, open it etc it just says not responding and stays that way for 10+ minutes. I can't even access any menu items. OSX Lion on a 24" iMac (3Ghz, 4Gb RAM) |

same issue here after many install and uninstall attempts. have also attempted manually adding user to the correct group - it now shows my user being a member of the boinc group multiple times. Tested with both 6.12.35 and 6.13.6. Had to resort to using command line in --insecure mode to get anything to compute at all. |

I'm running 6.12.35 (GUI) on Lion without such problem. I have no idea about the cause of your permission problem. But, you can check the data of the groups with 'dscl' command in Terminal.app. # Even after successful installation, the groups, boinc_manager and boinc_project, are not shown in the list on "User and Group" control panel. However, the data exists and can be checked the command. The example below is the case of my Mac Pro. I guess your uid ( tommy, in below ) should be listed in GroupMembership. mpro:~ 1 $ dscl . -read /Groups/boinc_master AppleMetaNodeLocation: /Local/Default GeneratedUID: 4AA7FD9B-B9D4-40E9-93B2-336B4D93152F GroupMembership: tommy PrimaryGroupID: 101 RecordName: boinc_master RecordType: dsRecTypeStandard:Groups mpro:~ 2 $ dscl . -read /Groups/boinc_project AppleMetaNodeLocation: /Local/Default GeneratedUID: 50022A6B-A615-4C4F-A452-CB1176152E59 GroupMembership: tommy PrimaryGroupID: 102 RecordName: boinc_project RecordType: dsRecTypeStandard:Groups Hoping this info gives some help for you. |

Not helpful for me. I have the same problem and have now lost the ability to run/support Boinc/WCG. I have re-installed, uninstalled and re-installed, run Permissions, rebooted, ... I am the administrator. I have changed permissions where the folder was locked ... still unable to run it! This is the first time I've had trouble reinstalling. I've had to do it before with other upgrades but it was simple and easy. This is AWFUL! I meant to mention that it's the first time I've done an install that triggered and opened Pacifist! |
