I have for many years being running BOINC successfully on a number of different machines with different configurations. This is the first time I’ve run into trouble I can’t solve, and it started happening with a new configuration (described below).

The symptom is: The screensaver starts up and runs just fine. However, it does not shut down. If I touch the keyboard or mouse, I get a black screen with nothing on it except the BOINC logo with the message “BOINC screensaver shutting down.” It never does, however.

The workaround is for me to open Task Manager and kill the boinc.exe process. This is annoying, since I have to leave my machine unattended many times during the day, and I have to do this repeatedly.

Now, all this started happening when I upgraded to Windows 7 Ultimate, 64-bit, SP1. This machine did run BOINC successfully with my previous OS, 32-bit Vista. Here are all the specs I can think of that might be relevant:

BOINC: 6.12.34 Windows 64-bit
Machine: Lenovo W500. All manufacturer-recommended updates are in place, including those to the graphics processor.
Memory: 8 GB
CPU: Intel Duo CPU T9900 @ 3.06Ghz
Graphics chipset: ATI Mobility FireGL V5700
OS: Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit SP1. All Windows Updates are in place.

Any suggestions on what to try would be greatly appreciated. (And, of course, if someone has had exactly this problem and knows how to fix it, fantastic! I am not holding my breath, though, because I did a search before posting this.)

Thank you everyone,

I'm having the same issue on Windows Vista.
I have recently removed Boinc and re-installed from fresh, even deleted the config files and used a program to clean up my registry for left over bits.

The screen saver comes on, then I try to wake the machine, seconds or hours later and I get the black screen with the Boinc logo and a message stating the screenm saver is shutting down.
I've been able to clear it using the three finger shuffle (CTRL, ALT, DEL) to bring up the logon dialog for my machine.

Any help on this anoyance would be appreciated.

Thanks
