I am finally updating my computer with Windows 7 Ultimate. Can I move my current WU's, state files, etc. from Windows XP Pro 32 bit to Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit? Or do I have to wait for the WU's to complete? I'm currently downloading the 64 bit version of BOINC to install on Win7. I have one WU from climateprediction.net that's not due until January of next year, it's only 0.554% complete at this point, and another that's due to complete in April. My other projects I can just tell to not get any new tasks, until I make the change over. This computer is dual-booting WinXP and Win7 |

Best set No New Tasks on all projects, run the cache empty before changing OSes. You're now certainly using 32bit applications, that's not so certain under Win 7 - 64bit. After that, make a backup of your BOINC Data directory. Default at Windows XP this will be at: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\BOINC\ (this may be a hidden directory, so make sure to run with Show hidden files and folders). Under Windows 7 this changes to default C:\Programdata\BOINC\ due to permission trouble it'll have at the old position (nothing is allowed to write C:\Documents and Settings\ anymore). Never mind about the old BOINC programs directory, you don't need it. Then first install the new OS; - Next move the data directory to its new place first. Make sure that the permissions on the directory are correct (for at least the account you plan to run BOINC with); - Next install BOINC, whereby in the third screen in the installer you click the Advanced button; -- Check the default paths for the programs and data directory. Everything as you want it to? - Continue installation of BOINC. - Start BOINC, sit through the benchmarks, then set Allow new tasks. And you should be done here. If however you plan on using a GPU to do work with: a) Install the manufacturer's driver before you install BOINC. b) Don't install BOINC as a service (protected application execution), since this will break GPU detection under Windows Vista and 7, due to drivers running under a separate account than BOINC. |

Thanks Jord, New OS installed in it's own partition. Installed 64 bit version of BOINC, attached it to BAM!, set all projects to not get new WU's. BOINC Manager started to download client programs, all client programs were intelx86 versions. Exited BOINC and uninstalled it. Copied data directory from H:\Programs\BOINC to C:\ProgramData\BOINC (non-standard location on WinXP). Reinstalled BOINC, and started it. All projects loaded, BOINC suspended them to run the benchmarks and two of them started running, after benchmarking finished (dual core machine.) The only problem so far, is a bad flickering of the CPDN graphics while in screensaver, not while doing "Show Graphics". The BOINC screensaver itself does not show any flickering. I don't know about the rest of the projects yet. Will their graphics flicker while in screensaver? I'll see. No GPU installed, not yet. Any recommendations on a video card? Currently using an NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GS. Not running as a service. Old BOINC directories still in place, as WinXP is in it's own partition. Program updates, downloads and installation proceed. Trying to replace old 32 bit programs with 64 bit versions where I can. |

The project graphics use OpenGL, which isn't part of the drivers installed by Windows. You will have to upgrade the drivers from the Nvidia site to get OpenGL support. Before you wonder, the BOINC screen saver is also OpenGL, but if that's not found it switches to DirectX automatically. |
