After receiving notification that a new version of boinc for Mac was available, I downloaded it. I clicked on the installer, saw a generic icon bounce once on the dock and an error screen "The document 'BOINC.pkg' could not be opened."

I have tried a number of times and have searched the forum but can not find a solution. I am using Mac OS X 7.10.3. Boinc 6.12.35 (x86) is running fine but all that I read suggests that I move to Boinc 7; however, I can not seem to get beyond this point.

Try to download the installer again. It would seem that the installer you have is corrupted.

Ageless,
I apologize for not being clear. It seems that I did not complete this thought clearly,
I have tried a number of times
by downloading the installer file. I have downloaded no less than five times, not including the one a few seconds ago.

Same result.

I just logged out and back in under another user name [Who I granted admin rights.] and am happy to report that I was successful in upgrading my boinc client.

Now to figure out why I the machine owner/administrator can not install this software. Hmmm.

Thanks for your patients.

This post http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dev/forum_thread.php?id=7476&nowrap=true#44081 may have the answer. It is a permissions issue and may be a OS X bug/feature.
