This may be really straightforward but I'm finding this frustrating!

I'm trying to limit my network usage. Under Activity I have it set as Run Always, and Network Activity Based on Preferences.

Under my Computing Preferences, I have network usage between 00:00 and 04:00.

However, both boinc.exe and boincmgr.exe are still using the internet outside of these hours, and at quite a hefty rate too!

Can anybody offer some insights as to why this is happening, and how to get round it?

Thanks!

What monitoring tool are you using to observe this 'internet' traffic?

boincmgr.exe should never access the internet - all external communications are handled by boinc.exe

However, boinc.exe and boincmgr.exe talk to to each other all the time, using TCP/IP on localhost (127.0.0.1:31416). Some network analyers/firewall monitors can display this purely internal activity in a way which fails to distinguish it from external traffic.

A simple five-second test: pull out the network cable, or turn off the WiFi switch. If the activity continues, it's internal, and nothing to worry about.

Having said that, I have an open bug report about BOINC sometimes contacting project schedulers when network activity is suspended, but that doesn't sound like your situation.

What does the message tab or event log say?, On Boinc 6.10.58 it works correctly:

19/05/2012 13:12:48 Suspending network activity - time of day
19/05/2012 13:13:01 Resuming network activity
19/05/2012 13:14:46	SETI@home	Computation for task 13my10ae.22708.239.9.10.177_2 finished

Now my upload is suspended.

Under my Computing Preferences, I have network usage between 00:00 and 04:00.

And lastly in the list of questions, where did you set this one?
At a project's web site, or in BOINC Manager's local preferences?

The local preferences override the web preferences. So if the local preferences state to use the network all the time, and you're set to use the local preferences, then BOINC will use the network whenever it can.

I think you have solved the problem for me.

The app I used to monitor what I thought was internet traffic is TCPView.

The local port says 61369, the remote port says 31416.

I tried resetting the router, and the data count continued to rise, so looks like you're right, it's local traffic, not internet traffic. Phew!
