Hi

Long time user of BOINC platform and for first time I hit the wall.

I have very strange problem with BOINC client. [Win7 64b]

It doesn't shut down when ordered to do so. If I click icon and select Exit in the tray or Exit via File menu program (GUI) closes just fine but all task running in the background as nothing happened.

To shut down it for good I have manually kill whole process (boinc.exe). Recently upgraded my PC and in fact I've done that many, many times, but nothing like that happened before. Tried different versions - without positive results.

I need to quickly close BOINC. Running it when UPS is engaged = bad idea. Unfortunately client don't know how to shut itself down when UPS is engaged.

Thanks for any help you can provide

That behaviour is configurable! See Science applications continue running when I exit BOINC Manager at the BOINC FAQ Service.

To shut down it for good I have manually kill whole process (boinc.exe).

You shouldn't do that, because it might damage the results of your running tasks.

There's a "Shut down connected client" option in the Advanced (Tools?/Extras?) menu of BOINC manager's advanced view.

And for your purposes, a "Suspend" from the Activities menu would suffice (don't forget to resume later ;-).

I need to quickly close BOINC. Running it when UPS is engaged = bad idea. Unfortunately client don't know how to shut itself down when UPS is engaged.

Doesn't it help when you uncheck the "Computing allowed... While computer is on batteries" option in your preferences?

Gruß,
Gundolf

Oh dear I feel so stupid right now. Before selecting the box to unload calculations from memory when exiting, I disabled exit dialog completely from Options menu.

Routine is sometimes worst enemy of any man. ;D

As for UPS option it doesn't work at all. It never did for as long as I can remember. I think it is only for laptops not for external batteries. Tested BOINC with plethora UPS, never worked. Using only APC products. That particular box "Computing is allowed when on batteries" was never selected once since it appeared many, many, many versions ago.

UPS option works 100% for me. Of course the O/S has to talk to the UPS. When you get the right drivers installed for your UPS give it a try. I have it working under XP, 7 and Mac O/S. Don't have a Linux box but it is a driver issue if you have a problem.
