I've installed BOINC manager on Ubuntu 12.04
This is what I see:



How to switch to advanced view?

Shift + CTRL + A switches to Advanced view.

Why there is no button or menu item to do that?

There is, it just looks like your GUI isn't rendering correctly. As to why that is, I don't know. The Simple View GUI normally looks like shown in http://boinc.berkeley.edu/wiki/Simple_view. There you'll also find the menu entries.

Now, you don't say which BOINC 7.0 you use, but perhaps it's an old beta that had not all rendering included. Or really, it's some library you lack on your system.

Why not do ldd boincmgr and post the outcome? (That's el dee dee).

It's a bug in wxwidgets, there is a work around for it in 7.0.32 (similar to the one for the same problem in the advanced view in 7.0.29). Until the Ubuntu repositories have been updated you probably can force the menu bar to show itself by resizing the window.

Plus the project option to stop accepting work items doesn't do anything - BOINC keeps accepting new work items (though the menu does change to show the opposite option "allow new work items" or whatever it's called). Plus if I try to quit the BOINC Manager it just doesn't want to die, I have to kill it with fire. And then I have to kill the worker threads with sudo killall -u boinc.

Frankly, I'd rather boot Windows to run BOINC if this is how it's going to treat me on Linux.

Setting 'No New Tasks' doesn't stop Boinc from accepting new work, what it does is stop Boinc from 'asking' for new work, if you don't ask for work, you shouldn't get it,
But, Projects with older Boinc Server software like Einstein (you don't say whih project this is on) that have 'resend lost tasks' enabled, will resend the lost tasks even when you haven't asked for work,
later revisions of the Boinc server software will only resend lost tasks if Boinc asks for it in the first place,

It took me awhile to realize this too, but on 12.04 BOINC also takes over the bar at the very top of your computer. So when it is open on the top where it says "Boinc Manager" ( not on the small window but along the very top of your screen) take your mouse up there and it will switch to a bunch of options, then simply select view, and Advanced mode.
