Hi, I got fed-up with being told that a new version of the BOINC was available. I was running 7.0.27 with the offer of 7.0.28. I first uninstalled 7.0.27 with Synaptic and tried to install 7.0.28 by following the instructions. When I start it, I get the message "Another instance of BOINC is already running on this computer. Please select a client to monitor." It requires a host name and password. I don't know what the host name and password are. What should I do to get BOINC running, hopefully with my old projects. There were/are 4 of them. I'm running Linux 3.2.0-32-generic (x86_64), very badly!!! Thanks loads Martin |

What happens when you just click OK, with both fields empty? The hostname is usually localhost, or 127.0.0.1, unless you changed that. You shouldn't need to be a password. You can check for one though in rpc_gui_auth.cfg in either /etc/boinc-client or /var/lib/boinc/, depending on your actual Linux distro. |

Hi, with both empty, says "unable to connect to core client" If I put 127.0.0.1 as the host, it says "Retrieving current status" then fails and says "Unable to connect to core client". If I try localhost the result is the same. Also, I don't have a file called rpc_gui_auth.cfg on my filesystem, but there is 1 called gui_rcp_auth.cfg Sorry Martin PS How can I tell which distribution I'm using, as I don't remember?? |

Excuse me, the file I meant is gui_rpc_auth.cfg ... what were my fingers thinking? To find out what distro you run... See http://www.howtoforge.com/how_to_find_out_about_your_linux_distribution |

Hi, thanks for the correction. Now, my BIG computer has started making a funny grinding noise, and now fails to start, but the disk light is alway on. Not too good. The other thing is that I'm off to Heathrow this evening, to pick my Mum up from her holiday in New Zealand. So, as I knew I was going away, I should have resisted the temptation to upgrade BOINC, but there we go. I think I'll close this thread, (not sure if you can really do that) as I won't be able to do anything with it for a while, and I've got to try and fix the other computer. Thanks for your help Martin |
